Man, I was so hyped when Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade finally came to the Switch 2 earlier this year! Everyone’s been counting down the days for Rebirth, which drops on June 3rd. Getting two Final Fantasy games in one year for the Switch 2 is awesome, but get this – it looks like even more modern Final Fantasy titles are coming to the console in 2026! Seriously, what a year for Switch gaming.
Square Enix announced at the 2026 Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest that the popular online game, Final Fantasy 14, is coming to the Switch 2 in August 2026. This is great news for fans, especially since the game’s new expansion, Rebith, will also be released on the console around the same time. 2026 looks like a fantastic year for Final Fantasy fans who own a Switch 2! Final Fantasy 14 has allowed players to explore its world together since 2010, and with a major expansion planned for early 2027, releasing on the Switch 2 in August gives newcomers plenty of time to learn the ropes before the update arrives.
Final Fantasy 14 Headed to Switch 2 in August 2026

Since its launch, Final Fantasy 14 has been widely available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 & 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and players on all these platforms can play together and carry their progress across them. However, it hasn’t been playable on Nintendo Switch consoles – likely because of the Switch’s hardware. Now, like Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade before it, Final Fantasy 14 is being prepared to run on the upcoming Switch 2.
The popular online game, Final Fantasy 14, is coming to the new Switch 2! Here’s what you need to know: it’s free to play up to level 70, offering a lot of gameplay before any costs kick in. Plus, you won’t need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play, even though it’s an online game. However, current Final Fantasy 14 players should be aware there are some changes coming with this new version.

Unfortunately, your existing Final Fantasy XIV subscription won’t work with the Switch 2 version. While you can transfer your progress between platforms, you’ll need to purchase a separate subscription for the Switch 2, even if you already play on another system. Existing players will receive a 50% discount on this additional subscription, but it’s still an extra cost to play on the Switch 2. This might be a problem for current players, but if you’re new to the game, the Switch 2 could become your preferred way to play.
Final Fantasy 14 is coming to the new Switch 2 in August 2026, though the exact release date hasn’t been announced yet. Starting April 28th, new players will be able to enjoy a more extensive free trial, now including the content up to Patch 5.5, known as Shadowbringers.
