Indie Games Are More Important Than Ever Before

Independent, or ‘indie,’ games have actually been around since the very beginning – the first video games were made by individual developers. Over time, large gaming companies became dominant, similar to what happened in publishing for books, movies, and music. However, indie developers never disappeared, and today they’re incredibly important to the gaming world. While major companies still release big-budget games, the industry is becoming less divided between these giants and independent creators.

As a gamer, I’ve always known that getting a really good game usually meant paying the standard price – lately that’s been around $60 to $80, depending on what system you’re on. Prices have definitely gone up over the years, but what’s cool is that indie games have mostly stayed affordable. You can browse platforms like Steam and find amazing games for much less, and the best part is you’re directly supporting the people making them! I’m not saying we should never spend money on those big-budget AAA titles, but honestly, indie games feel more important than ever right now.

The 2020s Are Ripe for Indie Expansion

Looking at the 2025 Game of the Year awards gives a good snapshot of the current gaming landscape. Remarkably, independent studios created half of all the nominated games. Even more noteworthy, the Game of the Year winner, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, was an indie game that looked and played like a major studio release. It truly represents the peak of what indie developers can achieve, and it’s a fantastic game. It beat out strong competition including Death Stranding 2, Donkey Kong Bananza, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Hades II, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, with the last three also developed by independent studios.

It’s now much simpler for game developers to reach a large audience thanks to platforms like Steam. With 132 to 147 million monthly users, Steam offers incredible reach. Its Early Access program is particularly helpful, allowing developers to share and sell games still in progress, and even fund further development with player support. This collaborative approach – involving players throughout the development process – has consistently led to the creation of exceptional games.

Indie Pass is a newer platform dedicated entirely to independent games. For a small monthly subscription, players can access a whole library of titles. New games are added often, letting players enjoy unlimited playtime while directly supporting the developers who create them. It’s a fantastic way to discover and support great indie games – currently, it costs $6.99 a month or $55.02 annually for access to over 70 games. Indie Pass and Steam Early Access are just two of the many ways to experience indie games, but they offer excellent value. Don’t forget about platforms like Kickstarter and BackerKit, which also allow you to support indie development.

There Are Tons of Options When It Comes to Indie Games

I began by highlighting the growing importance of indie games and how we can support their developers – a topic that really matters. Now, let’s look at some of the best indie titles from the last ten years, including standouts like Hades, Hades II, Noita, Tunic, Fall Guys, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Dispatch, and Rematch, among many others. These games are created by talented, passionate people, and that dedication shines through in their work.

Of course, there are also many fantastic AAA games. However, with delays becoming increasingly common – GTA VI has been pushed back multiple times, and many studios are facing similar issues – it feels like delays are now the norm. It’s even become a running joke! When AAA releases are delayed, why not explore the wealth of indie options? Games like Timberborn, Undermine, Subnautica, Stardew Valley, Slay the Spire 2, and Dead Cells offer plenty of entertainment and are readily available online. There’s always something new to discover and enjoy.

Hey everyone, I’m always on the lookout for awesome indie games. What’s the best one you’ve ever played? I’d love to hear your recommendations! Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come join the discussion!
