The just broke a major record formerly held by the original console.
Nintendo has sold over 10.36 million units of the new Nintendo Switch since it launched in March. This is faster than the original Switch, and current sales suggest the new model will surpass the 10-month sales record of the Nintendo Wii by about 20%.
The Switch 2 Could Be Nintendo’s Biggest Console Ever
The Nintendo Wii sold over 101.63 million units during its lifetime. However, the original Nintendo Switch has been even more successful, selling a remarkable 153.1 million units since its 2017 launch – counting all three versions of the console. From its release in March 2017 to Nintendo’s October 2017 financial report, the Switch had already sold 7.63 million units.
Building on the popularity of the original Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2 is selling well, largely because it launched with a much bigger selection of games than the first Switch did.
In early October, reports showed the Nintendo Switch 2 had a stronger start than the PlayStation 4 did. Within its first three months, the Switch 2 sold 2.4 million consoles, surpassing the PlayStation 4’s 2014 record of 2.2 million units sold during its initial three months.
A new version of the popular game Animal Crossing: New Horizons is expected to boost sales of the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo recently announced it will be re-released on January 15, 2026.
If you already have Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll be able to download a free update that includes all the new content and improvements. Plus, on the same day, both the original Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the game will receive a free Version 3.0 update, adding even more new features for everyone to enjoy, no matter which system you play on.
I’m so hyped for the new update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons! One of the coolest things coming in Version 3.0 is definitely Kapp’n’s Resort! We’ll finally get to decorate all the rooms however we want, and it sounds like we can even let our villagers borrow outfits while they’re visiting our island. It’s going to be amazing!
