As a dedicated Nintendo Switch Online member, I’m thrilled to receive some free Wario-inspired icons this month, which are reminiscent of the Wario Land games! This perk is a fantastic bonus that encourages us to make the most of our subscription privileges while revisiting some timeless Nintendo classics. However, don’t forget to grab these icons for your collection before September 1st, as they will only be available for a limited time.
The method to acquire the rewards is quite simple. Players who possess the right membership levels for Nintendo Switch Online simply need to launch Wario Land 3 and Wario Land 4, at which point the various icons become accessible to secure with Platinum Points. Each icon players wish to obtain will require 10 Platinum Points, available for purchase during this temporary “Play to Unlock” event happening in August.
In simpler terms, Platinum Points function as the virtual currency earned in your My Nintendo account when you accomplish different tasks. If a player doesn’t have enough Platinum Points and wishes to unlock those unique, event-specific Wario icons, they’ll need to put in extra effort to gain access to them.
The perks gained from Nintendo Switch Online remain part of your account permanently, whether or not you decide to continue your subscription. However, it’s important to note that certain emblem rewards can only be obtained if you have the upgraded “Expansion Pack” membership service, which allows access to the Game Boy Advance app and Wario Land 4. This means those who haven’t upgraded yet won’t be able to claim these specific emblems without purchasing the upgrade.
The basic level of Nintendo’s subscription plan costs $19.99 annually, whereas the advanced tier, referred to as the Expansion Pack, goes for $49.99 per year. New users can try out the standard membership free of charge, but the Expansion Pack membership is not included in this trial offer. Although the Expansion Pack comes at a higher price point, it provides access to extra Nintendo Classic games through apps.
- Nintendo Gamecube (Switch 2 exclusive)
- Nintendo 64
- Game Boy Advance
- Sega Genesis
Individuals with the standard subscription can enjoy NES, SNES, and Game Boy games via Nintendo Classic apps. Notably, “Wario Land 3” debuted on the Game Boy Color in 2000, while “Wario Land 4” followed suit on the Game Boy Advance in 2001.
It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a new Wario Land game, with the last one being “Wario Land: Shake It!” released on the Wii back in 2008. Since then, the WarioWare games have taken over as standalone Wario titles. However, just recently, “Wario Land 4” was added to Nintendo Switch Online. This suggests that Wario is still a focus for Nintendo, and perhaps a new game or rerelease of a previous title might be in development for us Wario fans in the future.
