Nintendo Warns Switch Online Users of New Scam Trying to Steal Your Data

Nintendo is alerting Nintendo Switch Online members on both Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 to a new, dangerous scam. This scam aims to steal your personal information and sell it, and while Nintendo doesn’t know how many people it’s affected, they felt it was important to warn users. However, the warning wasn’t widely publicized.

Hey everyone, just a heads-up for my fellow Nintendo Switch Online players. I’ve been seeing reports of a bunch of phishing emails going around pretending to be from Nintendo. They’re trying to trick you into clicking links about your automatic renewal, but they lead to some really dodgy websites. Nintendo says DO NOT click those links, just delete the email right away. Seriously, stay safe out there!

Notice

Nintendo has recently discovered phishing emails pretending to be about automatic renewals for Nintendo Switch Online. These emails try to trick users into visiting fake websites. Nintendo warns users not to click any links in these emails and to delete them right away.

What Happens If You Click on One

The consequences of clicking a phishing email vary depending on the attacker’s goals. At best, they might just collect your username and password, making you a target for future attacks. But it could be much worse: the link could download harmful software onto your device or allow thieves to steal and sell your personal information. If they obtain sensitive data, you could even become a victim of financial fraud. Simply put, avoid clicking on links in suspicious emails.

Nintendo has acknowledged recent phishing attempts and released a statement, which may help reduce them. However, it’s still important to carefully check any emails claiming to be from Nintendo and avoid clicking on links within them. We don’t know why Nintendo Switch Online subscribers are being specifically targeted, or how these email addresses are being obtained.
