A role-playing game originally released for the Nintendo Wii in 2009 is getting a remastered version in 2027. Unlike the original, which was only available on Wii, this new version will be released on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, and PlayStation 5. While the exact release date in early 2027 hasn’t been announced, it likely means sometime in the first three months of the year.
Developer Vanillaware and publisher Marvelous are working together to bring back the classic action game Muramasa: Revenant Blades. This is a refreshed version of Muramasa Rebirth, which was itself an updated release of the original Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Vanillaware is a well-established Japanese studio with a history of acclaimed games, including Odin Sphere (2007), 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (2019), and their latest title, Unicorn Overlord (2024).
2009 Action RPG
If you’re unfamiliar with these games, Muramasa: The Demon Blade is an action RPG originally released in 2009 as a Nintendo Wii exclusive. While it received a good score of 81 on Metacritic, it didn’t become hugely popular at the time. Over time, however, it gained a dedicated following as a cult classic that many people hadn’t played. In 2013, an updated version called Muramasa Rebirth came out for the PlayStation Vita, along with some extra content. Now, that version is getting a new release in 2027 for various platforms. It will be priced at $49.99 on most platforms, but will cost $59.99 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
This remastered version features updated graphics in 4K resolution, a completely redone English translation, and – for the first time – English voice acting. It also includes new game modes, mechanics, and ways to play, though details about those additions haven’t been revealed yet.
The game tells a story through the eyes of six different characters, all caught up in a major war over incredibly powerful samurai swords created by the famous blacksmith Senji Muramasa. This conflict spills blood across the land, attracting dangerous spirits and demons.
