Anyone who enjoys video games knows that the LEGO games made by Traveller’s Tales have consistently been fantastic.
TT Games creates incredibly fun experiences, especially for kids, by taking popular stories and adding clever humor and creative gameplay. They always manage to make things playful and enjoyable.
However, the games have consistently been straightforward, typically featuring separate, sequential levels.
Okay, so I’ve played a lot of LEGO games, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight totally changes things up. Forget those smaller, level-based games – this one lets you explore a massive, open-world Gotham City! Honestly, if you’re a fan of the Arkham games, you need to play this. You’re seriously missing out if you don’t.
Legacy of the Dark Knight feels like a collection of the best Batman stories, all brought together in a fantastic setting.
The story begins with Bruce Wayne’s beginnings, showing his journey from a man seeking training with the League of Shadows to ultimately becoming Batman.
Although you can freely explore Gotham City, the game’s missions are structured as separate, focused levels rather than one continuous open world experience.
Batman will team up with supporting characters like Jim Gordon, Catwoman, or Robin, each bringing their own special skills and equipment to the fight.

You can easily switch between characters to solve puzzles and complete challenges. While the puzzles aren’t overly hard, they’re always rewarding, with a satisfying sound of LEGO bricks falling into place when you succeed.
The game’s levels usually center around famous Batman villains. During our preview, we battled Carmine Falcone, Poison Ivy, and Two-Face, each with a humorous and over-the-top LEGO-style reimagining.
During their raid on Falcone’s hideout, Batman and Jim Gordon unexpectedly discover a playful area for his thugs, complete with slides and ball pits. They also stumble upon a section set up like a dance game.
Despite the goofy visuals, the writing and physical comedy in this game are fantastic – truly the Traveller’s Tales team at their peak. I haven’t experienced a game preview with so much genuine laughter.
Shai Matheson delivers a wonderful performance as Batman, skillfully balancing the character’s serious and playful sides.
LEGO Batman truly shines during its combat sequences, which are remarkably well-done.
Unlike most LEGO games that just involve repeatedly pressing buttons, this game requires you to mix up your attacks with dodging, using gadgets, and performing special moves, depending on the enemy you’re facing.
You can also rely on stealth, taking out enemies by silently attacking from above or sneaking up behind them.
All of this leads to epic boss battles that are more impressive than those in games like LEGO DC Super-Villains.
Battling Poison Ivy, for instance, happens in stages and combines jumping challenges, simple puzzles, and, naturally, some fighting.

Honestly, this game threw me for a loop! It was surprisingly difficult at points, which is a nice change of pace for a LEGO game. I usually breeze through these, but this one actually made me think!
Despite everything we’ve talked about, we haven’t yet mentioned what’s arguably LEGO Batman’s biggest strength: its expansive open world.
Batman and his allies have many ways to get around Gotham City, whether it’s driving the Batmobile or gliding from rooftops, always searching for crime to fight.
Gameplay includes everything from simple fistfights with criminals to solving riddles from villains like the Riddler and Cluemaster. You’ll also unlock subway stations for quicker travel and participate in street races.
The game handles its crimes really well. Instead of feeling like one-time events, they always happen near landmarks like subways or Riddler puzzles. This gives you clues to find hidden content, so you don’t have to search everywhere randomly.

I really enjoyed solving The Riddler’s puzzles in LEGO Batman – I could have played all day! Sadly, my time with the game had to end.
Having seen many game previews, I’ve learned that the versions shown to the public often differ significantly from the finished game, so I try not to get too excited.
Even after just a few hours playing Legacy of the Dark Knight, I’m convinced it perfectly captures what makes both LEGO games and Batman games great.
Some fans of the Arkham games might dismiss this one right away, thinking it’s too simple or aimed at a younger audience.
I feel sorry for anyone who can’t relax and have fun with this game – it’s basically a new Batman: Arkham title, but with really funny writing and a clear passion for the original Batman stories. If you can’t enjoy that, what’s the point of playing games at all?
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is fantastic, and I’m excited to race around Gotham in the Batmobile, solving puzzles again.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases on 22 May 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
