Off Campus Officially Losing A Main Character Member Ahead Of Season 2

Briar University will be missing a student when Off Campus returns in season 2.

The first eight episodes of Prime Video’s new hockey-themed romance are now available. The show, based on Elle Kennedy’s novel The Deal, tells the story of Hannah and Garrett. Unlike the books, which focus on a different couple in each installment, the series tells one larger story with multiple characters. While the first season of Off Campus mainly centers on Hannah and Garrett’s relationship, it also introduces storylines that will be important for Allie and Dean later on.

Thanks to the popularity of the Heated Rivalry series, Off Campus quickly became a hit on Prime Video, reaching the top of the streaming charts. The show attracted both fans of Kennedy’s novels and new viewers, making its success predictable. Prime Video clearly has faith in the series, as they renewed Off Campus for a second season before the first one even premiered. However, a significant character won’t be returning for the next season.

In an interview with TV Guide, creator Julie Plec confirmed that Justin Kohl, Hannah’s initial love interest who sparked the fake dating plot with Garrett, won’t appear in season 2 of Off Campus. However, she indicated they’re still considering bringing Josh Heutson back in future episodes. You can find her complete statement below.

Josh is someone I really like, and I’m hoping to find a way to bring him back in a future season, potentially if we can also bring Justin back. We haven’t met Stella yet – she’s Josh’s eventual partner in the book – so there’s a possibility we can incorporate him later on. He won’t be available next season, but I’m not ruling him out for good.

The first season of Prime Video’s Off Campus took some significant liberties with the original book. The show tried to fit in many storylines at once and also changed several plots, scenes, and characters. For example, Justin’s character was altered: in the book The Deal, he’s a football player who enjoys reading Ernest Hemingway. However, the show reimagined him as a musician, similar to Hannah, to create a stronger romantic connection between them. While changes from the book haven’t always been well-received, this particular alteration was a logical choice.

If the Prime Video series follows the order of Kennedy’s books, the second season of Off Campus will focus on the relationship between John Logan and Grace Ivers. While both characters have been cast, Grace hasn’t appeared on screen yet, though she was mentioned in the first season. Some fans believe the show might tell Allie and Dean’s story first, as the first season set up their romance. Either way, Justin isn’t involved in either storyline, so the actor who plays him leaving the show shouldn’t affect the plot.

As much as I’m enjoying Off Campus, it’s only been officially renewed for two seasons so far. That means if it doesn’t get picked up again, we might have seen the last of Justin! I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen, and that the creators, led by Levy, get the chance to bring him back for season three and continue his story. Fingers crossed!
