Olivia Rodrigo Shares She Is Partially Deaf in One Ear

Olivia Rodrigo isn’t holding a grudge over her hearing difficulties.

Olivia Rodrigo often jokes about being partially deaf, even using it as material when talking about her song “what’s wrong with me” from her album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

Rodrigo revealed on KISS FM UK that he has significant hearing loss in his left ear – around 60%. He explained that someone sitting to his left wouldn’t be able to whisper a secret to him without him missing it.

The 23-year-old quipped, “So, if you tell me a secret, go right ear.”

As a longtime fan, I was surprised to hear that Olivia Rodrigo has hearing loss in one ear, though she’s mentioned it’s been something she’s dealt with for a while. It’s definitely unusual for someone at her level, but it’s something she’s actually lived with since she was a kid.

She discovered she had some hearing loss around kindergarten age, when standard tests revealed it. As she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, ‘It’s interesting.’

Nevertheless, she displayed her signature wit at the time, too.

The singer explained that her friend, photographer Petra Collins, has poor eyesight. They often joke that the singer makes music because of her own hearing problems, while Petra takes photos despite her vision issues.

Rodrigo is used to overcoming challenges. After her hit song “Drivers License” launched her career in 2021, she made sure to surround herself with supportive people to help her adjust to her new life.

She told Vogue Singapore that she’s focusing on getting through things gradually, but it’s been hard on her mental wellbeing. She expressed gratitude for the people who support her for who she is and protect her from negativity, gossip, and online chatter.

She went on to say that getting noticed can feel strange – it alters things on the surface, but doesn’t really change what matters. The challenges she faced a year ago are still present, and the things that made her happy then still do now. It’s just another part of life you have to adjust to, but it doesn’t change who you are at your core.
