Drag Race’s Michelle Visage Details RuPaul’s Friendship Offscreen

Michelle Visage could never be green with envy over RuPaul. 

RuPaul and Bob Mackie have been close friends ever since they first met in the late 1980s, and their bond has only grown stronger over time.

Viewers have gotten glimpses of Michelle and the contestants’ playful moments ever since she became a judge on the show in 2011, but she says that’s just a small part of all the fun they share.

“Oh, you don’t get to see a lot,” she told TopMob News in an exclusive interview. “You see the craziness and the fun and the laughter that we have together, and that’s there all the time.”

However, the 57-year-old added, “I’m not sure if people really know what big goofy kids we are.” 

Their friendship thrives on shared laughter, especially at lighthearted moments, and a common passion for dancing.

Michelle shared that when they’re filming, she’ll often go into his dressing room while he’s getting ready and start dancing. He’ll happily join in, even with only half of his makeup done, and they’ll dance together. She says this playful, carefree energy is still a big part of their relationship.

Even after long periods apart, she and Ru act as if no time has passed, like close, playful friends.

She described how even during video calls, they connect without needing a specific topic. They simply enjoy each other’s company, laughing and chatting while having a drink. She feels this casual connection is a sign of a healthy, mature relationship.

Michelle and Ru’s close connection wasn’t accidental. The singer explained they’ve built such a strong friendship by actively making it a priority.

She explained that throughout the years – from the 80s, 90s, and beyond – they’ve grown as a couple. While they might not always agree on everything, they’re both so comfortable with who they are as individuals that differences, like one preferring beef while the other doesn’t, aren’t a problem.

She also explained that she and Ru share a natural connection and a deep, lasting love that isn’t going to fade.

Friendship means a lot to Michelle, and her experiences during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 90s have fueled her commitment to promoting sexual health.

Many people I’ve known would have given anything for the chance to prevent HIV transmission with a medication like PrEP,” she said, speaking about her work with ViiV Healthcare. “It’s still a problem, especially with young people, who don’t realize HIV can affect anyone.

As a big supporter of PrEP, I really want everyone to understand that this isn’t something that only affects certain groups. It truly could impact anyone, no matter where they live or when. And that’s why I always emphasize that PrEP is for everyone – it’s about protecting ourselves and each other, regardless of background or risk factors.

As Michelle also pointed out, there are now several ways to take preventative medication, and she highlighted long-acting injectable medicines as a particularly promising development.

She expressed enthusiasm about the variety of HIV prevention methods available, emphasizing that what works for one person might not work for another. She also highlighted ViiV’s Get PReP Wisdom website as a helpful resource, adding that many people are unaware of all the options available to them.
