Olivia Rodrigo is taking one step forward while her haters are taking three steps back.
Just weeks after facing criticism for wearing a women’s dress and bloomers from Generation78, the singer known for the song “Drop Dead” explained her side of the story.
Olivia shared in a recent interview with The New York Times Popcast podcast that she’s been really bothered by something, but surprisingly, it’s not about her personally. She said she doesn’t mind what people say.
The 23-year-old said she was really upset to see people so angry about what she considered a fairly conservative outfit.
She explained that she’s sometimes worn revealing outfits while performing, like a sparkly bra and shorts, and felt confident and comfortable doing so. Surprisingly, she felt that wearing a fully covered-up dress, which others considered too young-looking for her, was actually seen as more inappropriate.
After Olivia Rodrigo’s performance in Barcelona on May 8th, some online commenters reacted negatively to her current style. One user on X (formerly Twitter) even made the serious accusation that her visuals were appealing to people with harmful interests.
Olivia responded strongly, pointing out that the situation highlights a troubling pattern in our society. She explained that girls are often taught from a young age to avoid attracting unwanted sexual attention by dressing a certain way, implying they are responsible if someone sexualizes their bodies. She found this messaging deeply unsettling.
The singer of “The Cure” clarified that the dress, which caused a lot of discussion, was meant to capture a riot grrl style.

She confessed she didn’t feel attractive in the outfit, but instead felt empowered. She thought she resembled her musical heroes, Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love, and that made her feel both cool and comfortable.
Trust, Olivia is not going to be taking fashion advice from the peanut gallery.
She believes that focusing on preventing others from perceiving you as overly sexual or inappropriate is a bit excessive and misses the point.
The former Disney star said she plans to keep dressing in a way that makes her happy, and also sets a positive example for her younger fans.
She explained that she feels strongly about protecting young women and girls and doesn’t want them exposed to harmful ideas. She believes no one should feel responsible for another person’s inappropriate sexualization of them, especially if they didn’t intend to provoke it.
