Since its release in September, Superman has been the most popular film on HBO Max. James Gunn’s blockbuster stayed at the top, especially with the new season of Peacemaker connecting to the movie’s story. However, as October brought a focus on horror, a new 2025 horror film joined HBO Max and quickly took over the top spot, knocking Superman down and holding it there.
HBO Max added Zach Cregger’s film, Weapons, to its streaming service three days ago, perfectly timed for the Halloween season. The movie was already a success in theaters, so it’s not surprising it’s quickly become popular on the platform. In fact, it’s become the most-watched film, surpassing Superman and sending that movie to its lowest ranking since its release.
Weapons Is an Immediate Hit on HBO Max

The movie Weapons is currently the most popular title on HBO Max, attracting more than three times the viewership of the next most-watched film. Data from FlixPatrol shows Weapons at number one globally, followed by the 2024 horror film The Substance. The popularity of Halloween-themed movies is also evident, with the revival of I Know What You Did Last Summer at number three and All Fun and Games at number four on the streamer.
I’ve been checking out FlixPatrol, a site that keeps tabs on how popular movies are on streaming services worldwide, and the numbers are pretty striking. Right now, Weapons is absolutely dominating, with a score of 620 – it’s the number one movie in a whopping 63 countries! The Substance, while still showing up, is lagging behind with a score of 190, averaging around 2.4 across just 21 countries. Even with a lot of horror options doing well right now, it’s clear Weapons is really capturing the attention of audiences globally.
Currently, Superman is number five on the worldwide list, performing well despite competition from popular horror films. Two horror movies, IT (from 2017) and Barbarian (from 2022), are gaining ground and climbing the charts. With Halloween approaching, these films are likely to become even more popular, potentially pushing Superman lower on HBO Max’s Top 10, or even off the list altogether.
