When the Nintendo Switch 2 was first revealed, Nintendo immediately signaled its commitment to RPG enthusiasts. By securing FromSoftware’s upcoming game as a Switch 2 exclusive, Nintendo demonstrated that its consoles can offer top-tier, modern RPG experiences. Now, the original Nintendo Switch has gained another excellent RPG, available to all players – even those who haven’t upgraded to the Switch 2. On October 2nd, a highly anticipated RPG from 2025 became playable on the Switch.
The game, called Shujinkou, came out on PC and PS5 in February. Though it’s a smaller indie title from Rice Games, Inc., it’s received a lot of praise from both critics and players. This JRPG features turn-based battles, dungeon exploration, a compelling story, and even lets you practice Japanese! It boasts an impressive Metacritic score of 90 for the PS5 version, and now it’s also available on the Nintendo Switch.
JRPG Fans Won’t Want to Miss Shujinkou On Nintendo Switch
As October begins, lots of gamers are eager to relax with their Nintendo Switch and a fun new game. There are plenty of recent releases to choose from for the handheld console. But fans of Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) should be excited to hear that Shujinkou is now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. The game features a lengthy story, offering over 80 hours of gameplay and plenty of content to discover.
I think Sujinkou deserves its high Metacritic score for a few reasons. First off, it really nails what I love about JRPGs – we’re talking turn-based battles, puzzles, and a huge number of side quests to get lost in. If you’re like me and miss the classic feel of early JRPGs like Final Fantasy, this game brings back a lot of those familiar mechanics. Plus, the soundtrack is fantastic, and there’s this cool hidden feature that I, as a JRPG fan, totally appreciate: it actually tries to teach you Japanese! It’s a really neat addition.
If you’re interested in Japanese culture and language, the educational aspect of Shujinkou is a major benefit. The game includes thousands of Japanese words, phrases, and grammar points, subtly teaching you the language as you play. However, if you prefer to skip the language learning, you can switch to “English-Only” mode and simply enjoy the compelling story and gameplay of this JRPG. Regardless of whether you pick up Japanese along the way, the game’s story – about a retired Samurai trying to protect his town from monsters that consume language – is definitely worth playing.
Shujinkou has been well-received by players on PlayStation 5 and PC, especially those who enjoy Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) and are interested in learning the Japanese language. The game blends traditional JRPG gameplay with relaxing elements like fishing and romantic interactions. As of October 2nd, it’s now available for Nintendo Switch owners, and it’s confirmed to work perfectly on the Switch 2 as well. Shujinkou is priced at $29.99, and several downloadable content (DLC) packs are already out to add even more to the game after you complete the main story.
