Although TV series are traditionally the core of anime, anime movies are now incredibly popular in cinemas. Films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle have earned massive amounts of money, and many other anime movies have also proven very profitable. With lots of new anime films planned for worldwide release, some cinemas are looking back at classics to celebrate the growing success of the medium. GKids recently announced that a highly-regarded anime movie from the 2000s will be back in North American theaters very soon.
GKIDS is bringing back the 2006 anime film Tekkonkinkreet to cinemas with a brand new 4K remaster. The film will be shown in Western theaters on May 31st and June 1st. While it may not be as famous as Studio Ghibli’s biggest hits, Tekkonkinkreet is a moving and worthwhile film. GKIDS describes it as a story of strong love and unbreakable bonds, set in a changing world, with stunning visuals from STUDIO4°C (known for Mind Game) and based on the popular manga by Taiyo Matsumoto. The remastered version promises to look better than ever in 4K.
Tekkonkinkreet’s Big Comeback
If you haven’t seen it, Tekkonkinreet is a visually stunning anime film originally based on a manga series from 1993 by Taiyo Matsumoto. While a short anime adaptation appeared in 1999, the full-length movie came out in 2006. The story of Black and White is captivating, but the film’s animation is truly special – it still looks fantastic years later. Anime fans should consider seeing this 4K remastered version on the biggest screen possible, even if they’re already familiar with the movie.
When GKids announced the return of the anime film to cinemas, company president David Jesteadt shared his personal enthusiasm for it. He said that Tekkonkinkreet has been a favorite of his for over 15 years, praising its exciting action, the touching bond between the two main characters, and its unique visual style. He’s thrilled GKIDS can help both longtime fans and new viewers experience the film.
Along with the return of Tekkonkinkreet to cinemas, several beloved Studio Ghibli films will be shown in theaters again in 2026. As part of the Studio Ghibli Fest 2026, classics like Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away will be screened. The festival will kick off in June and run through October.
