Batman remains incredibly popular, and that doesn’t seem likely to change. Because of this, there’s always a lot of Batman content available. However, some stories are truly exceptional. Now, one of the very best is returning, and for the first time, it will include Superman in its unique setting.
Sean Murphy, Matt Hollingsworth, and Todd Klein’s Batman: White Knight, first published in 2017, quickly became a fan favorite. Since then, the story has expanded with several sequels and spin-offs. Now, Murphy has announced a new installment, and for the first time, Superman will appear in the White Knight universe. Murphy also shared a first look at Superman’s design, and it’s exciting to see these two iconic heroes together in this world. You can see the new design below.
Everything We Know About Superman’s White Knight Debut
The “White Knight” universe presents an alternate take on the Batman mythos where the Joker recovers his sanity – though it takes a severe beating from Batman to get there. This version lets fans see the man behind the Joker, Jack Napier, who is still a complicated character, but in a very different way. The series has also expanded to include other members of the Bat-Family, Harley Quinn, and even Jack Napier’s children, Jackie and Bryce. Notably, the Harley Quinn spin-off series is considered one of the best Harley Quinn comics DC has ever published, offering a fresh and compelling take on the character.
Sean Murphy is bringing Superman into his White Knight world, and this version of the hero is a young man in his early twenties. That’s why he appears a bit shorter than Batman at first, but Murphy explains that Superman will soon surpass Batman in size as his powers fully develop.
The book will explain the meaning of the ‘S’ symbol, which is featured on the costume in a classic blue, red, and yellow color scheme. The cape is connected to this symbol and is notably larger than usual. Alongside the fully costumed Superman, you’ll also see Clark Kent’s everyday look – a vest and white shirt in Superman’s signature colors, paired with brown pants and boots – which serves as the foundation for the superhero’s design.
An amusing detail about Superman’s first costume is revealed: when he initially wears the suit, he doesn’t have his iconic red boots yet. He simply paints his old work boots red because they’re more comfortable. According to the artist, three farmers shared a similar sentiment – once you’re used to sturdy work boots, it’s hard to get used to anything else – and this feeling inspired Kal-El’s preference for his painted work boots.
We don’t have a release date for the new Batman: White Knight series yet, but we expect to hear more information soon. You can find the earlier Batman: White Knight stories on DC Infinite and at your favorite comic book shop.
