One of Disney+’s Biggest Franchises Returning for 5th Movie (but Without Its 2 Main Stars)

Disney often takes its movies aimed at young adults to the limit, and one of their most popular recent series is back with a fifth installment. The original Zombies movie came out in 2018 and was a fun, musical comedy about zombies trying to be accepted in a town that didn’t understand them. True to Disney form, the story also featured teenagers, upbeat songs, and impressive dance routines. In fact, Zombies is very similar to Disney’s High School Musical, except with a spooky, undead twist!

Disney has confirmed that a fifth Zombies movie will begin filming this year. While the movie doesn’t have a title yet, it picks up after Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires. The story will focus on a new challenge to the peace between werewolves and vampires when a group of mermaids arrives in Rayburn and tries to recruit new friends. Surprisingly, Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly, who have starred in previous films, won’t be appearing on screen this time, but they will be involved as executive producers.

What to Expect from Zombies 5

The first Zombies movie focused on zombies trying to be accepted into a regular high school. Each sequel then introduced new types of monsters. After the zombies successfully integrated in the first film, the second movie brought werewolves into the story. Similar to the first film, humans and zombies were initially wary of the new group, but this time, the werewolves presented a legitimate threat. The third movie expanded the group further with the arrival of aliens. The werewolves, zombies, and humans, now friends, worked together to protect their town from the aliens, and ultimately, welcomed them into their community as well.

The series took a different turn with the fourth film, which probably explains the change in main characters. Instead of staying in Seabrook, the new leads went on a road trip and discovered a town torn apart by a conflict between vampires and people who could walk in the sun. Having found acceptance for zombies, werewolves, aliens, and humans, they tried to help the vampires and daywalkers find peace as well. This introduced two popular new characters: Nova, a daywalker played by Freya Skye, and Victor, a vampire played by Malachi Barton. The movie ended with Nova and Victor sharing a kiss, just as something mysterious emerged from the water.

What makes the Zombies movies so appealing is their message of acceptance and the idea that people from all walks of life can get along. The plot is predictable – the new ‘villains,’ in this case mermaids, will almost certainly become friends with the vampires and werewolves by the end, just like in every other film. Really, the most important thing is that the musical performances and choreography stay fantastic.

The fifth Zombies movie will feature returning cast members Swayam Bhatia (as Vera), Julian Lerner (as Ray), and Mekonnen Knife (as Vargas), alongside new leads Nora and Victor. Joining them as mermaids are new cast members Diaana Babnicova as Pearl, Taylor Oliver as Fin, and Olive Mortimer as Sandy. Paul Hoen, a DGA Award winner, is also back to direct, having directed all of the Zombies movies to date.
