Stephen King is incredibly popular in film and television. For over 50 years, his books have inspired more than 100 movies and TV shows, many of which are classics in their genres. King himself has a few favorites, and one particularly heartbreaking film he loves has just become available on a new streaming service.
For a truly unsettling and emotionally powerful horror film, check out Lewis Teague’s Cujo, adapted from Stephen King’s 1981 novel. King himself considers it one of his best adaptations. Unlike many horror movies, Cujo builds tension through fear and desperation, rather than graphic violence. The story follows a mother and son stranded in their car, battling for survival against a St. Bernard that has become a terrifying, rabid beast. Cujo is now available to stream on Paramount+, as of April 1st.
Stephen King Praised Lewis Teague’s Cujo Adaptation
Stephen King often says Stand By Me is his favorite movie adaptation of his work, but he also considers Cujo among the best. In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, he called Cujo “terrific” and praised several other adaptations, including Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Misery. He even once said he’d choose Cujo as one of the three movies to take to a desert island. King particularly appreciates the ending of the Cujo film, which differs from the book’s ending and actually caused him to receive more negative feedback than anything else he’s ever written.
There’s a lot of disagreement about the movie Cujo, even among Stephen King fans. Although it’s a well-known adaptation of his work, it doesn’t score very high on Rotten Tomatoes – critics give it a 60% rating, and audiences only give it 46%. People generally liked Dee Wallace’s acting and the film’s suspenseful build-up, but many felt the first half was too focused on the characters’ personal lives and that the pacing was slow and repetitive. Some viewers also thought it lacked the psychological complexity of the book. The ending was particularly divisive, with opinions sharply split on whether the changes made were positive or not.
Other Horror Movies Now on Paramount+
In April, Paramount+ added several horror movies, including Cujo, to its streaming library. It joined titles like the Paranormal Activity films, Shutter Island, and The Woman in Black. The platform plans to expand its horror selection even further in May with Scary Movie 4 and Scary Movie V, building up to the release of Scary Movie 6 in theaters in June.
