The 1980s were a hugely important years for horror films. Films like Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, along with the beginning of well-known and frightening slasher series such as Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, showed a scary new direction for horror in cinemas. One particularly famous horror movie from the ‘80s, even though it was rated PG, is just as frightening as others, and horror fans will be excited to hear it’s now back on streaming.
If you’re an HBO Max subscriber hoping for a frightening movie this Halloween, you can now watch Poltergeist (1982). This classic film was directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg. Despite having a PG rating, it’s definitely not suitable for children. Poltergeist follows the Freeling family as their quiet life is disrupted when spirits start communicating with them through their television, and their young daughter, Carol Ann, disappears. The movie became available on HBO Max on October 1st, and stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Beatrice Straight.
Why You Should Watch Poltergeist
Don’t be misled by the PG rating – Poltergeist is genuinely frightening. Originally given an R rating, it was lowered to PG after an appeal by Spielberg and Hooper-before the PG-13 rating existed. This movie is a psychological horror that plays on the common fear of something supernatural disrupting the safety of suburban life, and it centers the terror around a young child. From startling jump scares to disturbing scenes and imagery – like a creepy clown doll and visions of peeling skin – and the overall terrifying atmosphere, Poltergeist isn’t a lighthearted Halloween watch for families. It’s a strong and intense horror film best suited for those who enjoy a good scare. In fact, it’s consistently ranked among the most frightening movies ever made.
As a huge cinema fan, I still get chills talking about Poltergeist. What really makes it work, for me, is how they created the scares using incredible, groundbreaking practical effects. And Jerry Goldsmith’s score? Absolutely terrifying – it really builds the suspense and keeps you hooked. But it’s not *just* scares; the movie brilliantly centers around the Freeling family and their desperate fight to get Carol Anne back, making you genuinely invested in their story. It’s a true horror classic, and rightfully so – it’s “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 87% critic score. Considering it grossed over $121 million worldwide, it’s no surprise it launched a whole franchise! There are now a total of four movies and even a TV series, all stemming from that original, unforgettable film.
Other Horror Movies Now on HBO Max
Poltergeist became available on HBO Max on October 1st, joining a wide selection of other spooky new movies just in time for Halloween. If you’re an HBO Max subscriber planning a Halloween movie marathon, you can now stream popular horror films like Beetlejuice, Drag Me to Hell, Hereditary, Talk to Me, The Exorcist (1973), and The Shining. The streaming service also added movies from well-loved horror series, including A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and Insidious.
