HBO Max, a top streaming service, is joining forces with Paramount Skydance, a service many consider to be struggling. This merger of Warner Bros-Discovery and Paramount Skydance is likely to cause big changes in the streaming landscape, and fans are understandably worried. Specifically, DC Universe fans fear that Skydance, known for its conservative views, might remove James Gunn and alter his plans for DC Comics. There are also questions about the future of HBO, a highly respected television network, and the other channels owned by the combined company.
During an investor call on Monday, Paramount CEO David Ellison discussed plans for the company following the recent merger. He announced that HBO Max and Paramount+ will combine into a single streaming service. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ellison explained that Paramount plans to consolidate Paramount+, Pluto TV, and BET+ into one offering, similar to how HBO Max operates. He believes this combined service, with its extensive content and technological capabilities, will allow Paramount to effectively compete with the largest players in the direct-to-consumer streaming market.
What Will Happen to HBO After the Merger?

It’s clear David Ellison aims to challenge Netflix and Prime Video with the Paramount streaming service. Currently, Paramount+ focuses on network TV shows and children’s programming. Adding Warner Bros. films and shows from HBO, plus sports content from TBS and TNT – including AEW Wrestling – could transform Paramount+ into a major streaming competitor. Ellison noted that Paramount+ and HBO Max together have over 200 million subscribers.
I was so relieved to hear that Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t plan to change HBO! Casey Bloys and his team are doing amazing work, and the company wants to let them keep doing what they do best. Basically, they said HBO should stay HBO, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s fantastic to know they value the quality and independence that makes HBO so special.
As a huge TV and movie fan, I was thrilled to hear HBO is still committed to quality programming – they’ve been a leader for nearly thirty years, and that’s not something to take lightly. Shows like Euphoria, The Pitt, and everything they’re building in the Game of Thrones universe are just fantastic. And now, with Paramount promising to support movies with proper theatrical releases, it feels like David Ellison and the team are really understanding what audiences want. It’s genuinely encouraging to see a studio prioritizing both great content and the cinema experience!
Don’t expect to see these changes quickly. Although Netflix has withdrawn from its previous agreement and received $2.8 billion from Paramount, Paramount still needs to get approval from regulators. Even if they do, merging HBO Max and Paramount+ won’t happen until at least 2027. A big concern for viewers is whether the combined service will maintain HBO Max’s high quality, or if it will drop to the level of Paramount+, which would be a letdown.
