One of the Biggest Animated Sequels in History Just Landed on HBO Max (And It Is Even More Bonkers Than You Remember)

HBO Max is famous for its high-quality TV shows and popular movies, but it also has a lot of excellent animated content. Recently, the service added even more, including a hugely successful animated sequel that made a lot of money at the box office.

Get ready for the next Ice Age movie by revisiting one of the series’ wildest adventures, Ice Age: Continental Drift, now streaming on HBO Max! This fourth installment brings back Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, and Denis Leary as Manny, Sid, and Diego. They end up on a crazy sea voyage thanks to Scrat, and encounter pirates and other challenges along the way. You’ll also hear the voices of Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lopez, Drake, and Nicki Minaj in this fun animated comedy.

Ice Age: Continental Drift Is a Wild Film

The Ice Age movies are always entertaining and over-the-top, but Ice Age: Continental Drift really pushes the boundaries of silliness. The basic idea – the supercontinent Pangea breaking apart because of a squirrel’s acorn – is completely unrealistic, yet funny. The movie goes even further by mixing the Earth’s geological history and climate change with a pirate adventure, complete with musical numbers. There’s even a scene where the pirate captain, Gutt, and his crew launch into a lively sea shanty called “Master of the Seas.”

It’s up for debate whether the movie truly succeeded, but it still performed well commercially. While critics gave it a low score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences rated it higher at 61%. This makes it the second lowest-rated film in the Ice Age series, only above Ice Age: Collision Course. Beyond some historical and scientific inaccuracies, the film was criticized for a predictable story, overly flashy 3D animation, and unnecessary celebrity appearances. Despite these issues, Ice Age: Continental Drift was a fun, family-friendly movie that earned over $877 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of 2012 and one of the all-time highest-grossing animated movies.

What’s New on HBO Max?

HBO Max added a bunch of new movies on November 1st, including Ice Age: Continental Drift. Other titles now available include holiday favorites like Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, plus classics like The Bride of Frankenstein and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. For animated films, subscribers can now enjoy Happy Feet, Puss in Boots, and The Polar Express.
