One of The Biggest New Shonen is Going on Hiatus

Despite the huge popularity of anime right now, several manga series have recently concluded. Well-known titles like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia have finished their runs, as have other series including Astro Royale, The Trembling Right Hand, and Kemonokuni. Meanwhile, a major manga that began in 2023, while not ending, is taking a break from publication. Though not featured in Weekly Shonen Jump, this manga published by Kodansha has become very successful.

Manga artist Hiro Mashima, known for popular series like Fairy Tail and Edens Zero, launched Dead Rock in 2023. Currently, he’s working on both Dead Rock and the Fairy Tail sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. The manga is currently on break after finishing a major story arc focused on Yakuto’s time at the Academy. Fortunately, this break isn’t due to any health concerns with Mashima, and work on the next arc, “Godfall Arc,” is scheduled to begin this winter. While a precise release date hasn’t been announced, fans can expect Dead Rock to return later this year.

The Dead Rock is Rolling

It’s surprising to learn that Hiro Mashima is working on two manga series simultaneously, considering how demanding it is for artists to manage even one. Mashima has become well-known for his intense work ethic, often spending six days a week and up to seventeen hours a day creating his manga. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, also followed a similarly grueling schedule, but he’s been solely focused on that single series.

If you haven’t read Dead Rock yet, it’s now available in North America thanks to Kodansha. The story centers around a university for demons, and the main character, Yakuto, is thrilled to be accepted. While the school setting might remind you of UA Academy from My Hero Academia, Dead Rock is a much darker and more dangerous world. Whether the series will get an anime adaptation is still unknown. J.C. Staff recently animated Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest and Edens Zero, so they’d be a logical choice to adapt Yakuto’s story. However, J.C. Staff has faced criticism from anime fans recently due to issues with the third season of One-Punch Man.
