A popular and notoriously dark anime series is making a comeback with a new series of three movies, starting later this year. A first glimpse of the films has been released, giving fans an idea of what to expect. Dark fantasy anime has become increasingly popular recently, gaining a lot of attention from viewers. However, some series within the genre are particularly disturbing, notably one that depicts children facing serious and intense peril.
Since its anime adaptation premiered in 2017, Made in Abyss, created by Akihito Tsukushi, has gained a large and dedicated fanbase. The show’s initial success led to two recap movies, a sequel film, and a second season. Now, the story will continue with a brand new trilogy of feature films. You can get a first look at the Made in Abyss trilogy below.
New Made in Abyss Trilogy Begins Fall 2026
The anime series Made in Abyss is continuing with a new movie, the first of three planned films, scheduled to release in Japan this fall. While a specific release date for Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery hasn’t been announced yet, and international availability is still unknown, the production team has been confirmed. Masayuki Kojima, who directed previous installments, will return to direct this new film for Kinema Citrus.
Hideyuki Kurata is writing the script for the upcoming Made in Abyss movie, and Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda are designing the characters. The main voice actors – Mariya Ise as Reg, Miyu Tomita as Riko, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa – are all returning for the new film trilogy. The voice actors for two new important characters haven’t been announced yet.
Why You Should Watch Made in Abyss

Many anime fans find Made in Abyss difficult to watch because it follows two very young children, Riko and Reg, on a perilous journey. They venture into a massive, dangerous pit called the Abyss, where explorers frequently die from the strange and powerful threats within. Neither they, nor anyone else, are truly prepared for what awaits them, leading to a consistently intense and often harrowing experience.
The popularity of Made in Abyss after its anime first aired is understandable – it quickly captivated viewers and built a dedicated fanbase. With a new film trilogy on the way, it’s safe to say that fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this incredible adventure.
