Most MMORPGs require a monthly subscription, but a highly respected game in the genre originally became popular by letting players buy the game once. Now, after many years, it’s being re-released as a free game, giving a whole new generation of players a chance to experience what is considered one of the best MMOs ever made.
Guild Wars Reforged, a remastered version of the popular 2005 game Guild Wars, is coming to iOS and Android devices this summer. It will be free to download and play, but will include advertisements. Unlike many games at the time, the original Guild Wars didn’t require a subscription. Mobile players of the free version of Reforged will initially have access to the Prophecies campaign, with additional expansions available to buy separately.
While the base game of Guild Wars will be free to play, certain features will be limited. To unlock chat, trading, and remove advertisements, you’ll need to purchase the campaign. Players who previously owned Guild Wars Reforged (a free upgrade for returning players) can simply log in to their ArenaNet account and continue playing with their existing characters in the updated version. See below for pricing details on Guild Wars Reforged content for mobile devices.
- Prophecies (first campaign): $6.99
- Factions (second campaign): $6.99
- Nightfall (third campaign): $6.99
- Eye of the North (expansion): $9.99
- Bonus Mission Pack: $5.99
You can now pre-register for the mobile version of Guild Wars Reforged on Google Play (pre-registration for Apple devices will be available soon). The game will initially launch in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the Philippines, with a wider release planned for sometime in 2026. This mobile version features improved menus and controls, and also supports game controllers – a feature first introduced with the Reforged update for Guild Wars.
The mobile version of Guild Wars Reforged offers the complete game experience, and players on iOS, Android, and PC can all play together on the same servers. It also features full cross-progression, making it easy for existing players to jump back in – simply log in with your ArenaNet account and continue where you left off, even if it’s been 20 years! Reforged was already a welcome surprise following the success of Guild Wars 2, and this new mobile version could help the classic MMO thrive for years to come.
With iPhones and Android phones being so common, offering a free way to play Guild Wars could attract millions of new players. While it has the potential to revitalize the game’s community, it’s still uncertain how well the game will work on a touchscreen. MMOs often have complex controls and interfaces best suited for computers, and Guild Wars is no different. Advanced gameplay, in particular, usually involves a lot of on-screen elements. However, Guild Wars Reforged already improved the game’s accessibility, and the mobile version could build on that progress.
