Many fantastic games never leave Japan, often because developers worry Western audiences won’t be interested or because translating them is costly. Sometimes, passionate fans can convince developers to localize a game, but usually, these hidden gems rely on fan-made translations or, at best, the often-imperfect Google Translate. It’s unfortunate, but understandable given the challenges of language and limited budgets.
Many of Japan’s best role-playing games aren’t available in English, and that includes the highly-rated fourth game in the Yo-Kai Watch series. While the developers, Level-5, once planned to release it in the West, it looks like those plans have been dropped. It’s disappointing for fans, as Yo-Kai Watch 4 seems destined to remain exclusive to Japan.
Yo-Kai Watch 4 May Never Come To The West

Yo-Kai Watch 4 first came out in Japan in June 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, followed by a PlayStation 4 version later that year. While it received positive reviews and is part of a popular series, it hasn’t been released in English or any Western language. Level-5 released the game in China in 2023, but since then, there have been no announcements about a wider release. Even the updated version, Yo-Kai Watch 4++, which was available on PS4, never made it to North America or other Western regions.
Okay, so if you’ve been following Level-5 for a while, this probably isn’t totally shocking. They announced Yo-Kai Watch 4 was coming over here back in 2019, but then pretty much shut down their US office in 2020 and stopped bringing games to the West. It felt like we weren’t going to get anything new for a long time! Then, in 2024, Megaton Musashi W: Wired came out worldwide, and it felt like they were starting to pay attention to us again. Since then, we’ve gotten huge Switch games like Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road and honestly, the amazing Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. Now, with a new Professor Layton game on the way and Decapolice still to come, it looks like Level-5 is changing its mind about bringing its awesome games to the West again, which is fantastic!
Man, I’m really hoping Yo-Kai Watch 4 finally gets released over here. It’s been stuck in Japan for way too long! Honestly, even though Yo-Kai Watch is a great series and a real competitor to Pokémon, it never sold as well as it should have. I feel lucky we even got the first three games! It’s been almost seven years since Yo-Kai Watch 4 came out, so I’m starting to think Level-5 probably won’t bother bringing it over. That’s a bummer, because Yo-Kai Watch was seriously a fantastic alternative to Pokémon, and in some ways, it was even better. But even if we never see Yo-Kai Watch 4 in the West, Level-5 really shouldn’t give up on bringing the whole series to other countries. It deserves a bigger audience!
Level-5 Shouldn’t Give Up On Yo-Kai Watch In The West

Okay, so you’re wondering what Yo-Kai Watch is all about? It’s easy to think it was just trying to be the next Pokémon, but honestly, it did a lot more! It really took what made those games fun – exploring a cool world and collecting creatures – and ran with it. You wander around these beautifully made 3D towns and countryside areas that feel like real places in Japan, and your job is to find and befriend Yo-Kai. These are basically spirits – some mischievous, some just plain silly – who are causing trouble for everyone around town.
I’ve always been a big fan of the Yo-Kai Watch series. The first game felt like a collection of smaller stories, but it quickly grew into something much bigger, with time travel and so many different places to explore! What really struck me is that even though it’s aimed at kids, Yo-Kai Watch always tried to tell stories that were surprisingly deep and thoughtful – way more so than Pokémon at the time. Honestly, even when Yo-Kai Watch wasn’t at its best, it just felt more polished and had better storytelling. Plus, it really used the 3DS in clever ways that Pokémon never did. And the Switch version? Wow! The improved graphics, all the new locations, and playing with multiple characters really took the series to a whole new level. It was a fantastic use of the hardware.
I really loved the original Yo-Kai Watch games on the 3DS and always thought they were better than other creature-collecting games. But it seems like most people didn’t agree. Now, with Pokémon struggling and fans waiting a long time for the next big game (which might not be great), a high-quality game like Yo-Kai Watch 4 could be really popular, simply because there’s a demand for something like it.
Now that Level-5 is focusing on Western fans again, it’s a good time to try bringing the Yo-Kai Watch series to other countries. The Nintendo Switch has a much bigger audience than the 3DS ever did, Pokémon games aren’t as popular or well-received as they used to be, and indie games are thriving. If Yo-Kai Watch 4 never makes it outside of Japan, I hope Level-5 will at least think about releasing future games in the West, assuming they decide to continue making traditional Yo-Kai Watch RPGs.
