Looking for something calm and relaxing to watch? You’ll probably want to avoid this new, wildly over-the-top action movie that’s now available for free streaming. Streaming services have been adding a lot of new content lately, and Tubi recently added a fun, high-energy action film from the ‘90s that still has a dedicated fanbase – though a sequel never materialized.
Okay, so I was super excited to see that John Woo’s Face/Off is now streaming for free on Tubi! Seriously, this 1997 action movie with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage is just wild. The basic plot is that Travolta plays an FBI agent who goes under the knife to swap faces with the guy who killed his son – that’s Nicolas Cage’s character. It’s a crazy plan to stop a terrorist attack, but things go wrong when Cage wakes up early and seeks revenge. The cast is fantastic too, with Joan Allen, Gina Gershon, and Alessandro Nivola all adding to the fun, plus a bunch of other great actors like Dominique Swain, Nick Cassavetes, and Thomas Jane popping up along the way.
Face/Off Is an Unhinged Action Movie Like No Other, but the Sequel Isn’t Any Closer to Hitting Theaters
Released on June 26, 1997, Face/Off surprisingly redefined action movies, proving that stylish, over-the-top violence could be a winning formula. Director John Woo masterfully combined beautiful, elaborate gunfights with a wild, emotionally engaging story that captivated audiences. The film, starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in incredibly energetic roles as men who undergo facial transplant surgery, was a huge success. Its outlandish premise – a concept even more striking today with the rise of deepfakes – and constant, thrilling action built Face/Off a dedicated and lasting fanbase.
I remember when Face/Off came out – it was huge! It made so much money – over $246 million worldwide on an $80 million budget – and critics still love it, giving it a 93% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s actually one of the best-reviewed films for both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. But even with all that success, a sequel just hasn’t really come together, which is a little disappointing.
A sequel to the movie Face/Off was first announced by Paramount in 2019. Despite the years that have passed, the project remains stuck in development. Originally intended as a reboot, plans changed to create a direct sequel, and director Adam Wingard joined the team in 2021. As of March 2024, Wingard reported that the project is moving forward quickly.
What’s New on Tubi?

Joe movies, Sisu, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Beyond action, you can also stream comedies like Dinner For Smucks and Maid in Manhattan, dramas including Coach Carter and Good Will Hunting, and horror films such as Misery and Terrifier 3.
