The 1990s were a fun and interesting period for horror films. The decade gave us some truly great movies, like *Scream* and *Candyman*. It also saw a lot of over-the-top, campy sequels that really captured the spirit of the time – and were often more funny than frightening. One particularly strange and memorable sequel has recently become popular again thanks to a new release and is now streaming on Netflix.
Released in 1998, *I Still Know What You Did Last Summer* followed the surprisingly successful slasher film *I Know What You Did Last Summer*. While it cost more to make, the sequel didn’t perform as well at the box office and received much harsher criticism. Many consider it a weak follow-up to the popular 90s horror movie, citing poor writing, over-the-top acting, and some surprisingly silly plot twists. Interestingly, the film features an early role for Jack Black in a memorable, comedic scene. However, the movie might be gaining a new appreciation, or at least sparking renewed interest, among fans.
The newest installment of *I Know What You Did Last Summer* arrived on Netflix earlier this month, and the timing around Halloween is already generating excitement. But it’s the reboot – a legacy sequel, really – that’s truly got fans revisiting the original movie. This new version also landed on Netflix just a few days ago.
The recent remake of *I Know What You Did Last Summer* ties directly into the original film, but a particular scene at the end has horror fans already speculating about a possible sequel, *I Still Know*, for the first time in years. Be aware – the following contains spoilers for those who haven’t seen the new movie!
The Return of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
Following another deadly encounter in Southport, North Carolina, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) reappears in a post-credits scene for the 2025 film *I Know What You Did Last Summer*. The scene shows Brandy Norwood, reprising her role from the 1998 sequel, watching news coverage of the recent events. Julie then arrives at her door with a threatening note hinting at a new killer targeting her. She asks her former roommate, Karla (Norwood), for help, to which Karla responds with a playful, “Who’s getting messed up this time?”
If you watched the original *I Know What You Did Last Summer* before the new version, you might not be familiar with the character Karla. She was Julie’s roommate in the second movie, and both of them were targeted by a killer while on vacation in the Bahamas, who then began stalking them and their families.
The recent *I Know What You Did Last Summer* movie didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, earning just under $65 million. However, it wasn’t a complete flop either. Plans are in place to continue the series, drawing inspiration from *I Still Know What You Did Last Summer*, and a boost in viewers on Netflix could make a sequel more likely.
If the movie does well enough to get a sequel, both Karla and Julie will likely play significant roles. There’s also a good chance the next film could be shot in the Bahamas again.
