The creator of One Piece discussed his involvement with the upcoming season of the Netflix live-action series, explaining that the design of Tony Tony Chopper went through several important revisions before appearing as it did in the show. After the announcement of a second season, Eiichiro Oda hinted that Chopper would be fully introduced to the Straw Hat crew, which immediately caused fans to wonder how the beloved talking reindeer would be brought to life in live-action.
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, actually had the same worry during production. On the official Netflix podcast, One Piece: Into the Grand Line, Oda discussed how Chopper’s design evolved. He initially wanted Chopper to look more realistic, but realized that would be unsettling. He told his team to imagine Chopper as a plush toy, explaining that making him too realistic would fall into the ‘uncanny valley’.
One Piece Creator Explains Tony Tony Chopper’s Live-Action Design
Oda shared that he initially had some concerns, but the live-action One Piece team kept him involved from the beginning. He explained they originally aimed for a very realistic look, especially with Chopper, focusing on accurate animal anatomy. Oda suggested they approach Chopper as a cute stuffed animal instead, reasoning that making him too realistic would make him look unsettling. He felt thinking of Chopper as a plushie would also help guide the character’s performance.
We spent a lot of time figuring out Chopper’s voice, too. Oda-sensei explained that when he pictures cute characters in American live-action movies, they often have a slightly ironic or playful edge to appeal to older audiences. But he wanted Chopper to be genuinely, purely cute – a kind of cuteness he feels is special to Japan. He really stressed that Chopper needed to sound as adorable as he looks, and that Japanese-style cuteness was more important than trying to replicate what’s often done in Hollywood.
Why This Change to Chopper Makes Sense

Tony Tony Chopper was crucial to the success of the live-action One Piece series. For the show to work, it needed to create a believable world, both for the characters and the audience. The series struck a great balance with Chopper, making him realistic while still capturing the charm that fans love. This careful approach allowed One Piece to successfully translate to live-action.
We’ve already seen in Season 2, with characters like the Unluckies, that Chopper isn’t the only animal with a distinct personality in the world of One Piece. Season 3 of the live-action series is currently being filmed and promises even more imaginative creatures and characters. Given how well Chopper was brought to life, fans can be confident that the show’s other unique animal designs will also be fantastic.
