For many years, the One Piece anime has consistently released new episodes every week. While the animation studio, Toei Animation, has occasionally paused production or revisited older story arcs to ease their workload, they’re planning a bigger shift starting in 2026 to give the animators more breathing room. In a recent announcement from Japan, Toei revealed that the episode release schedule will be adjusted. This change is positive for the animators, but it remains to be seen how fans will react.
During a recent livestream announcing big updates for One Piece, Toei Animation announced a change to the anime’s release schedule. Instead of releasing new episodes every week, they will now only release 26 episodes per year. This is different from how the show has been released for years. In the past, some fans have criticized the anime for re-airing old episodes or stretching out storylines. While new episodes will continue to be released weekly for the rest of 2024, viewers should expect a slower pace of new content starting in 2026.
One Piece’s Animation Team Speaks

Toei Animation announced a change to how ONE PIECE episodes will be released. Starting in January, each year will be split into two shorter seasons (called “cours”), resulting in approximately 26 new episodes annually. According to Ryūta Koike, the series producer, this isn’t a reduction in content, but a strategic move to help the anime adapt the manga more effectively. Previously, about 11-12 episodes covered 4-5 volumes of the manga. With this new format, each episode will cover more of the manga’s story, improving the pace and flow while still taking advantage of animation’s unique storytelling abilities.
Toei announced some disappointing news for fans: the One Piece anime will pause production and new episodes from January to March next year. They plan to resume broadcasting in April 2026. While the anime is on break, fans will have plenty of chances to experience the “World of ONE PIECE” through other related content.
After their battle with the World Government on Future Island, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are heading to Elbaf, the island of the giants. To mark this exciting arrival – a place fans have been anticipating for a while – the crew is getting new outfits! However, anime watchers will have to be patient, as this story arc will be released a bit later than expected.
