A common complaint among One Piece fans is that the anime seems to unfairly focus on Sanji’s weaknesses. Many feel his comedic moments are overdone, and the show frequently portrays him as slower or getting defeated in scenes that aren’t in the original manga. This contrasts with Zoro, who often receives unique and positive additions to his portrayal in the anime.
The One Piece anime has been increasingly problematic in its portrayal of Sanji, especially during the Egghead arc. Moments like his infatuation with Bonney and his loss to S-Shark have led fans to believe there’s a deliberate downplaying of his abilities. Episode 1149 continues this trend, and many consider it the most glaring example yet of Sanji being unfairly treated in the series.
One Piece’s Latest Sanji Downplay Is Outright Unforgivable
Episode 1149 of One Piece showed Sanji and Bonney battling St. Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro. The anime expanded on a brief fight from the manga, but a moment where Nusjuro easily knocked Sanji away – even before drawing his sword – made Sanji appear weaker than he should have, especially since Nusjuro did draw his sword to fight Bonney.
The scene where Nusjuro attacked Bonney was particularly problematic. While Franky saved Bonney in the manga, the anime showed Sanji simply watching in confusion before Franky intervened. This made Franky’s rescue seem more important and unfairly diminished Sanji’s speed and overall abilities, and there’s no good reason for that choice.
The anime’s recent portrayal of Sanji hasn’t been great, and it’s about to be highlighted by a contrast with Zoro’s upcoming fight. Zoro’s battles are usually very well-animated and exciting, so his fight with Nusjuro will likely be impressive. This will unfortunately make the way Sanji is being handled seem even worse in comparison.
Why Does The One Piece Anime Seemingly Hate Sanji?
Sanji’s often portrayed as a comical character due to his strong attraction to women, and the manga has emphasized this even more lately. It’s understandable, then, that the anime focuses more on characters like Zoro, who are more serious, or even Luffy, whose personality is less distracting.
It’s unfair to underestimate Sanji. He’s just as capable in action scenes as any other character, and his storyline involving his family has actually given him more emotional depth than most of the other main characters, who haven’t really changed much over time.
Sanji has had some decent moments in the One Piece anime recently, but they’re often overshadowed by how frequently the show diminishes his importance. Episode 1149 is a recent example of this pattern, and it doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon.
