Following Gamescom 2025, Capcom has shared a demo video of their game Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which was playable at the event. The video, lasting approximately ten minutes, offers a blend of action, exploration, and combat, concluding with an intense boss battle. You can watch it below.
In the beginning, the video demonstrates basic gameplay, but as the protagonist Musashi Miyamoto engages in battles, both melee and ranged enemies come into play, making the gameplay more intricate. During these fights, the video highlights some impressive defensive techniques that players can execute, such as deflecting arrows aimed at them, which can then be sent back to the original attacker.
Additional defensive tactics are demonstrated as well, featuring the Issen counter that appears powerful enough to inflict heavy damage on ordinary opponents. Moreover, players can skillfully dodge and block attacks from various angles by perfectly timing their blocks and parries. Additionally, a gameplay mechanic called Oni Armament is introduced, enabling Musashi to wield two swords simultaneously to swiftly defeat weaker enemies.
In virtually every gameplay element, Musashi is challenged when squaring off against the main adversary, Sasaki Ganryu. This character serves as a formidable foe for Musashi, much like him. Similar to Musashi, Sasaki can employ various melee attacks and skills derived from his Oni Gauntlet. As the battle unfolds, at a particular stage, Musashi encounters an opportunity to strike a critical vulnerability that significantly influences the remainder of the confrontation.
This demo is identical to the one previously discussed on the PlayStation Blog, where they provided a sneak peek of the gameplay. In their post, they explained the functioning of different in-game controls such as light strikes, strong hits, defensive blocks, parries, and Issen countermoves.
At Gamescom 2025, attendees had an opportunity to play a demo of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. During the Opening Night Live event, Capcom showcased a trailer that highlighted various Genma enemies players will encounter in the game’s narrative. Additionally, we were given glimpses of some formidable challenges faced by Musashi, such as the legendary Yokai Nue, who possesses the power to hurl lightning at the player.
This demonstration additionally highlights that “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” will not encompass an open-world environment, a detail confirmed by director Satoru Nihei as early as June. Moreover, Nihei discussed Capcom’s intention to create an engaging gaming experience for players, rather than making the game overly challenging.
The game “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” is currently being worked on for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with an expected launch in the year 2026. In the interim, delve into the challenges Capcom encountered while seeking approval for the likeness rights of main character Musashi Miyamoto.
