Since the original Game of Thrones series concluded in 2019, the franchise has grown with new shows, but the story of House Targaryen remains central. Thanks to the popular character Daenerys, the Targaryens have always been a fan favorite and a key family in the overall story. Having ruled Westeros for nearly 300 years, the Targaryen dynasty naturally plays a significant role in HBO’s plans for spin-offs, including House of the Dragon and the more recent A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Although the three Game of Thrones shows – so far – have been quite different, especially A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Targaryen family has played a significant role in each one. Even the newest prequel, which mainly followed the commoner Dunk, revealed that his co-lead, Egg, was actually a Targaryen. These shows take place decades apart: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set nearly 80 years after House of the Dragon, and almost 90 years before the original Thrones. This makes it unlikely for any characters to appear in all three series – except for one: Brynden Rivers, also known as Bloodraven.
How & When Bloodraven Will Appear In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

Brynden Rivers, known as Bloodraven, was a character in Game of Thrones, though his true identity remained a mystery. For a long time, fans believed he was the original Three-Eyed Raven, before Bran Stark, and details in the books – where he’s called the Three-Eyed Crow – seemed to support this idea.
While the show doesn’t delve deeply into who he is, Daemon Targaryen’s visions in the final episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 strongly suggest his identity. The visions featured a man resembling a Targaryen standing before a weirwood tree, marked with a red birthmark on his cheek, and a raven taking flight – all details that align with the theory that this man is Brynden.
This character is already significant when considering the history surrounding A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The story takes place about thirteen years after a civil war called the Blackfyre Rebellion. This rebellion began when Daemon Blackfyre – one of King Aegon IV Targaryen’s illegitimate sons – challenged his half-brother, King Daeron II Targaryen, for control of the Iron Throne.
Brynden was one of Aegon IV’s illegitimate children, but he stayed loyal to House Targaryen, unlike his half-brother Daemon. A talented archer and commander, Brynden significantly contributed to their win by leading a unit of longbowmen called the Raven’s Teeth. They were the ones who ultimately killed Daemon and brought the fighting to an end.
The series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will adapt material from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. Bloodraven, a key character, appears in the third novella, The Mystery Knight, which will be the basis for Season 3 of the show. This story takes place around three years after the events at Ashford, at the castle of Whitewalls in the riverlands. Dunk and Egg stumble upon a hidden plot to launch another Blackfyre Rebellion, and Bloodraven plays a significant part in how everything unfolds.
He served as the King’s Hand for several years, even during the rule of King Maekar I Targaryen. Later, after a major life change, he was sent to Castle Black, eventually becoming Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He disappeared while on a scouting mission beyond the Wall, and the details of his fate – including how he became the Three-Eyed Raven – remain untold by George R.R. Martin.

Maester Aemon, a Targaryen and Egg’s brother, is another character who might show up in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He’s at the Citadel in Oldtown during the time the show covers, and the second book, The Sworn Sword, reveals Dunk and Egg once visited him. It would be easy to expand on that visit in the series.
It’s harder to picture Daenerys making an appearance, as she’s already shown up in two shows, much like Brynden. While a brief, prophetic cameo isn’t out of the question, it’s unlikely given that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a more focused story about Dunk and Egg. This isn’t necessarily a negative – the show will likely be stronger by telling its own story without her. Daenerys isn’t crucial to this narrative, but Bloodraven’s appearance feels much more important.
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming to HBO and HBO Max in 2027. You can currently watch all six episodes of its first season, along with all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the first two seasons of House of the Dragon, on HBO Max. House of the Dragon Season 3 will begin streaming in June 2026.
