I’m so excited about this final season of Outlander! It’s already fantastic – it’s wonderful to see all our favorite characters again, and they’re starting to reveal answers to things we’ve been wondering about for ages. It really feels like they’re setting the stage for an incredible ride with these last episodes.
This season of Outlander will see Caitríona Balfe not only starring as the main female character, but also making her directorial debut with the second episode.
The episode, titled ‘Prophecies,’ was written by Barbara Stepansky and directed by Balfe, who also contributed to filming some scenes in the previous season of the popular show.
During a set visit with TopMob and other media, Caitríona Balfe explained that after many seasons on the show, she and other cast members became producers. This allowed them to understand the production process and contribute to creative decisions.
I’d been trying to direct for a while, and last season I finally got to work on some second unit filming. This season, I was thrilled to direct a full episode. It was a fantastic experience, and working with Sam and the whole team in this new role has been amazing.

Honestly, everyone involved has been so wonderful and supportive. It’s been amazing playing these characters for over a decade, and getting to see the show from a different angle has been incredible. As an actor, you’re usually so focused on your part, so having this wider view of the whole story is really exciting and fresh.
It’s quite a shift to go from co-leading a TV show to then being directed by the person you act alongside – and Sam Heughan embraced that change, enjoying the new dynamic.
Heughan expressed his enthusiasm about being directed by Balfe, praising her understanding of the show and her skill as an actress. He noted she provides helpful and encouraging feedback, even in challenging situations, and described her as a joy to work with, making it a fantastic start to the season.
When season 8 starts, Jamie and Claire discover the war has reached their home at Fraser’s Ridge. The settlement has grown and become successful while they were away.
After years apart and with new faces appearing, the Frasers must decide how much they’re willing to give up for their home – and, even more crucially, how much they’ll sacrifice to remain a family.
The Frasers appear strong when facing enemies, but hidden family secrets are starting to cause problems within the family. They may have escaped the Revolutionary War, but now they face new challenges as they try to build a life at Fraser’s Ridge.
