Outlander Showrunner Reveals Mystery Highlander’s Identity

Just a heads-up – if you haven’t seen the Outlander finale yet, be careful, there might be spoilers! I have to admit, I’m still completely captivated by that intriguing Highlander we first met in the very first episode. It seems I’m not alone in wondering about him even now!

Ahead of the final episode of Outlander, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the mysterious Highlander glimpsed throughout the series is indeed Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan. The reveal explains a scene from the very first episode, where Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) is watched by a ghostly Highlander as Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) looks on. Roberts shared that the finale uses both footage from the pilot and newly filmed scenes to explicitly show Jamie as the ghost, finally clarifying the long-held mystery.

With Matthew B. Roberts, footage of his back is from older scenes, while anything showing his face is newly filmed, as we didn’t have any previous footage of Sam.

The recent revelation shows that Jamie wasn’t simply a ghost following Claire, but actively led her to the stones at Craigh na Dun – the source of her time-traveling ability. The poignant ending creates a complete time loop for Claire and Jamie’s love story, which the show’s creator intentionally crafted. This suggests Jamie’s spirit was responsible for bringing Claire back in time, allowing their incredible romance to begin.

That storyline was intentional. It felt like a perfect way to bring things full circle, especially because Sam and I had discussed it from the very beginning of the season. I told him I was planning to resolve that plot point, and he was immediately enthusiastic, feeling that the audience would appreciate it too.

In a recent interview with EW, showrunner Matt Roberts hinted at the fate of Jamie and Claire, confirming they both survive the series finale. Although Jamie is shot and Claire appears to die from grief, the final scene reveals they both regain consciousness. Roberts also suggested that Frank Randall’s belief about Jamie’s death at the Battle of Kings Mountain was incorrect, as he lacked complete information about the events following the battle when writing his book, Soul of a Rebel: The Scottish Roots of the American Revolution.

Here’s how it would work: Imagine you’re recording the details of a battle. If Jamie was shot on Wednesday and everyone grieved that same night, you, as the historian, would return home – maybe to Philadelphia – and write about his death on Thursday. Frank would then read your report and research historical records to confirm the exact date of Jamie’s death.

The very last scene after the credits shows Outlander author Diana Gabaldon at a book signing. She’s holding a leather journal identical to the one Claire used to write about her life with Jamie. This suggests that everything we’ve seen in the series might actually be a true historical account within the world of Outlander, rather than just a story created by Gabaldon.

Even though the original Outlander series has finished, the story isn’t over. The world continues with Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel series exploring the lives of Claire and Jamie’s parents. This new show, which first aired in August 2025, has been picked up for a second season and is already filmed. We can expect the new episodes to be released in fall 2026.
