Everyone is still wondering who will be the next James Bond, and fans are full of guesses. Recently, Sam Heughan, known for his role in Outlander, discussed the possibility of him being considered for the part.
Ahead of the final season of Outlander next year, Sam Heughan spoke with Radio Times about the possibility of becoming the next James Bond. He’s actually auditioned for the role before, trying out for the part of 007 in Casino Royale.
Sam Heughan Might Not Be the Next James Bond
Daniel Craig’s first film as James Bond, the 2006 spy thriller Casino Royale, concluded with his fifth film, No Time to Die, in 2021. Now, the Bond franchise is entering a new era. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights, and new producers, David Heyman and Amy Pascal, are taking over. Dune director Denis Villeneuve will helm the next installment, working from a script by Steven Knight, known for Peaky Blinders. Details about the new film are still to come.
Sam Heughan, 46, doesn’t think he’ll be the next James Bond. He recently said he feels he’s aged out of the role, joking that he might be better suited to play Bond’s father instead.
Caitríona Balfe, his co-star, suggested he play a Bond villain, someone who could be a real match for James Bond. She playfully pointed out his skill in action scenes, saying he’s ‘good at fighty-fighty’.
Heughan replied, “I’d love that. I’m always available, Denis.”
Sam Heughan recently shared a story with The Times about auditioning for the role of James Bond. He described a highly secretive meeting with the casting director, producer Barbara Broccoli, and director Martin Campbell. He was brought into a boardroom, and, to his surprise, found a golden gun on the table. He was immediately asked to perform a scene, which he found very strange.
He continued that he was told he “wasn’t charismatic enough.”
With Daniel Craig stepping down as James Bond, a number of British and Irish actors are being discussed as potential replacements. Names in the mix include Henry Cavill, Tom Holland, Callum Turner, and Jacob Elordi, but so far, none of them have publicly acknowledged the rumors.
According to a recent report in The Telegraph, the new movie isn’t expected to be released until at least 2028, and possibly as late as 2029 or even later. The delay is reportedly due to the filmmakers wanting to ensure the film is perfect.
Sam Heughan Already Has a Brand-New Show
The historical drama Outlander will conclude on May 16th with the last episode of its eighth season. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels, the time-travel series first aired in 2014 and has earned four Primetime Emmy nominations, with critics giving it a 91% approval rating over its eight seasons.
Just before the end of Outlander, Sam Heughan had already signed on for a new role. He’ll star in Embassy, a six-episode action thriller for Prime Video, alongside Anna Kendrick (known for Pitch Perfect and Woman of the Hour) and J.K. Simmons (The Closer, Spider-Man).
Sam Heughan announced on May 9th that he finished filming the latest series. He expressed his excitement for fans to meet his new character, Connor Wright, who he’ll be playing after his role as James Fraser.
Outlander is streaming on Starz.
