Owen Cooper’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” Acceptance Speech Decoded

Owen Cooper gave a sly shoutout to his favorite soccer team at the Golden Globes.

At just 16 years old, the English actor made history by becoming the youngest-ever winner of the Best Supporting Actor award in a television series. He received the honor on January 11th for his work in Adolescence and concluded his acceptance speech with the inspiring message, “You’ll never walk alone.” (You can find a complete list of winners here.)

Owen gave a powerful speech, but he was also subtly referencing the famous Liverpool Football Club anthem – a song he’s known to love.

Phil Barantini, the director of Adolescence, is such a big Liverpool fan that he allowed Owen to include a subtle reference to the team in the show.

During a visit to Anfield stadium last May, Owen recalled a moment from episode three, saying, “Phil gave a pencil to everyone on the crew, letting us all draw or write whatever we wanted.”

I also wrote ‘LFC > MUFC,’ meaning I said Liverpool was better than Manchester United, and it wasn’t removed. Phil decided to leave it up there.

In his Golden Globes acceptance speech, Owen also shared his thanks for the incredible journey his life has taken since becoming famous.

He admitted being at the Golden Globes felt surreal. He described the past as an amazing, yet challenging, experience for him and his family.

I thought I might be decent at acting, but it turned out I was terrible. I decided to take a chance and joined drama classes, which was really embarrassing because I was the only boy in the class, but I stuck with it.

The Wuthering Heights star added that he’s eager to continue learning from those around him.

I’m still very new to this, really. I learn something new every day, and I’m constantly inspired by the people around me.

“I wouldn’t be here without you guys,” Owen added. “This is mad, what is going on?”

The teenager ended his speech with his Liverpool shoutout and, “Bring on 2026.”
