I was really surprised to hear that Paramount Skydance actually won the deal to buy Warner Bros Discovery, especially since Netflix was also bidding! Apparently, their offer was just better. Now, they’ve confirmed they’re still planning to merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into one streaming service, which is exciting!
Now that the merger is moving forward, Paramount CEO David Ellison discussed his plans in a recent call with investors, according to Variety.
We’re moving forward with combining our two services, which currently gives us over 200 million direct customers. We believe this will allow us to effectively compete with the biggest players in the industry.
By mid-year, Paramount will finish combining our three streaming services into a single system. We plan to use a similar strategy for this platform in the future.
We believe our combined strengths – the wealth of content we have and our technological capabilities – will allow us to effectively compete with the largest direct-to-consumer brands.
Look, details are still fuzzy, and we don’t know exactly how the merger will shake out, or which shows will end up where. But in a recent interview, Ellison made one thing clear: he believes HBO needs to maintain its identity. He really stressed that HBO should stay HBO, and that makes sense – it’s a brand that, for years, has meant high-quality, award-winning television. He’s hinting that whatever happens, they’ll be carving out a special place for the HBO name and everything it stands for.
During the call, Ellison praised Casey Bloys and the HBO team for their excellent work. He also confirmed their plan to allow HBO to continue operating independently, so they can keep producing high-quality content as they always have.
We believe HBO should maintain its unique identity. They’ve created an incredible brand and are leaders in the industry, and we want them to keep producing high-quality content. Combining our platforms, however, will allow all of our shows and movies to reach a much larger audience than if we remained separate.

HBO currently offers a range of popular dramas like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, House of the Dragon, Euphoria, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us. Coming soon are new series including DC’s Lanterns and a fresh take on the Harry Potter story.
HBO Max is finally coming to the UK later this month. However, it appears this version of the service might only be available for a limited time.
