Paramount+ is adding more action movies to its streaming library this February. While the platform already features thrilling films like Novocaine, The Naked Gun, and Jack Reacher, it’s recently added titles such as American Assassin and Face/Off. Subscribers are especially excited about a hidden gem from 2024 that just became available.
Despite receiving negative reviews and a limited theatrical release, the action comedy Old Guy, directed by Simon West, is finding success on Paramount+. The film, which follows an aging hitman tasked with mentoring a young apprentice, began streaming on February 1st and quickly climbed into the platform’s Top 10 in the U.S. It reached number 4 on February 2nd, then number 3 the following day, and is currently holding steady at number 6. This puts it ahead of popular titles like Jack Reacher, Sleeping Dogs, and Top Gun: Maverick, though it’s still behind the top-ranked films The Running Man and Roofman on Paramount+.
Lucy Liu and Christoph Waltz’s Old Guy Is an Action-Packed Popcorn Watch
Okay, so “Old Guy” might not be the most thrilling action flick ever made, but honestly, I really enjoyed it. Christoph Waltz is just fantastic as Danny Dolinski, this older hitman who still thinks he’s got it, and gets one last assignment – training a young, very different protégé, Wihlborg, played by Cooper Hoffman. Their dynamic is really fun to watch! There’s a lot of great chemistry and humor as they take on this company that’s turned against them, and Lucy Liu is awesome as Dolinski’s girlfriend who gets caught up in it all. It’s a solid movie that I definitely wouldn’t regret watching again.
While the movie follows a familiar plot, it’s a genuinely enjoyable ride. The contrast between a seasoned assassin and his younger, more eccentric colleagues is particularly fun, and there’s plenty of action – lots of shootings and car chases – to keep things moving. It’s not a revolutionary film, but Old Guy is a satisfying action-comedy with a lighter tone. In fact, it’s much better than critics suggest – audiences loved it, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This makes it one of Christoph Waltz’s best-received films, even surpassing Inglourious Basterds, the acclaimed Quentin Tarantino movie for which he won an Oscar.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has added a variety of new movies this February, including the recent release, Old Guy. Alongside it, you can find everything from dramas like Call Me By Your Name and action films like Get Rich or Die Tryin’, to classics like Grease and comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. They even have family favorites like Rugrats Go Wild, and many more options to choose from.
