The second season of *Peacemaker* has given a surprisingly deep storyline to Eagly, Peacemaker’s pet eagle. He’s no longer just a funny, feathered friend; he’s become a key player, actively defending his territory from unwanted visitors and even gaining his own enemy. That enemy is Red St. Wild (Michael Rooker), a famous eagle hunter who becomes a serious threat after discovering he has magical abilities. Considering that DCU’s James Gunn isn’t afraid to kill off beloved characters – many fans are still upset about Nina’s death in *Creature Commandos* – viewers have been worried that Eagly might be in danger.
Warning: Spoilers below for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 5
The fifth episode of *Peacemaker* Season 2 expertly builds tension around the threat to Eagly, spending a lot of time showing Red St. Wild’s determined pursuit. He first tries to poison Eagly with a rat, but a fox eats the bait instead and quickly dies. Not giving up, Red St. Wild then uses his ridiculously large rifle to try and shoot Eagly directly. While chasing the eagle through the woods, he gets a clear shot, and Eagly falls from the sky, seemingly lifeless on the ground. For a terrifying moment, it looks like Eagly’s story is over-until another bird suddenly attacks the hunter.
What Eagly’s Fake-Out Death Really Means

The bird that fell wasn’t actually Eagly! The real Eagly suddenly appears, leading a massive attack with a whole group of eagles. They quickly surround the frightened hunter, and it’s obvious Eagly has magical abilities of his own. He orders the eagles to attack Red St. Wild as the villain desperately begs for mercy. This reveals that Eagly is the powerful “Primal Eagle” from Red St. Wild’s strange visions – a joke that seemed silly before, but now becomes a truly impressive moment. It also shows that Eagly is far stronger than anyone realized.
The scene works brilliantly because it plays on the audience’s fear, making the apparent death of a main character truly surprising. The agonizing build-up makes it feel completely believable that a beloved character could be killed off. The quick reveal that it’s a fake-out then provides instant comedic relief, turning the tables in a wildly over-the-top way. This moment perfectly wraps up Red St. Wild’s story, as he’s defeated by the very thing he predicted would cause his downfall. Plus, the whole experience transforms Eagly from a simple pet into a powerful mystical being, just before he and Christopher Smith head to another dimension.
