Horror movies are doing very well in Hollywood right now. Popular franchises like *Halloween* and *The Conjuring Universe* are still going strong. And with Peacock getting ready to launch a new series based on a classic horror story, the streaming service has added one of the most famous slasher villains to its library just in time for Halloween.
Peacock is now streaming the first three *Friday the 13th* movies: *Friday the 13th*, *Friday the 13th – Part 2*, and *Friday The 13th – Part III*. These films are where audiences first met horror villain Jason Voorhees. They arrived on the streaming service October 1st, just before the new *Crystal Lake* series is released. Announced in October 2022, the *Crystal Lake* series will be a prequel to the original 1980 film, with Linda Cardellini playing Pamela Voorhees and Callum Vinson as a young Jason. While a release date for the series hasn’t been set, fans can revisit the original movies on Peacock now to get ready.
Why You Should Watch Friday the 13th
Released just two years after the classic *Halloween*, *Friday the 13th* was hugely influential in defining and popularizing the slasher horror film. The 1980 movie, directed by Sean S. Cunningham, is iconic and creates a strong atmosphere, and it’s considered a landmark horror film. It established the summer camp as a common setting for these types of stories and featured more intense and imaginative killings, paving the way for the higher death tolls seen in later slashers. Despite a small budget of $550,000, the film earned $59.8 million worldwide. It cleverly used the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th and featured a memorable performance by Betsy Palmer as Pamela Voorhees, a mourning mother shockingly revealed to be the killer targeting the camp counselors.
The original *Friday the 13th* movie was only meant to be a single film, but it became so popular that it spawned a sequel, and eventually, a whole franchise – which we’re glad happened! As with many franchises, some *Friday the 13th* sequels are better than others, but the second and third movies are particularly memorable. *Friday the 13th – Part 2* successfully recreated the tense summer camp setting and shocking violence of the first film, and importantly, it introduced Jason Voorhees as the killer. The third film took things to another level, giving Jason his famous hockey mask and portraying him as more primal and animalistic. It also featured creative and incredibly gruesome kills that would become a trademark of the series.
Other Horror Movies Now on Peacock
Peacock is offering a spooky selection of horror movies this October. Although fans of *Friday the 13th* will need to look elsewhere to watch the full series, Peacock has plenty of other frightening options, including *Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3*, *The Purge*, the first three *Scream* movies, and most of the *Leprechaun* films. You can also stream movies like *The Mist*, the original *The Omen* (1976), *Ouija: Origin of Evil*, and *The Ring*.
