Pete Wicks: “I don’t understand why more people who have a platform don’t give a voice to the voiceless”

I always knew Pete Wicks was a kind soul, but I was so charmed to hear just how much he loves dogs! He actually told TopMob that he thinks they’re “better than people,” and honestly, I completely get it. He just seems like one of those people who truly appreciates their loyalty and unconditional love.

Pete Wicks is back for the third series of ‘For Dogs’ Sake,’ following the team at the Dogs Trust in Basildon – the same place he adopted his French bulldog, Eric, in 2016. Sadly, his other French bulldog, Peggy, recently died. Pete has now adopted a new puppy, four-month-old Rodney, from the Dogs Trust.

Wicks believes the love you give to dogs is returned many times over. He’s deeply troubled by human cruelty and has no patience for those who disrespect animals. He wishes more people with influence would speak up for animals in need, and he dedicates his own efforts to doing just that, as it’s very important to him.

The first series of Pete Wicks: For Dogs’ Sake won the award for Best Popular Factual Programme at the Broadcast Digital Awards. In the show, the 37-year-old works at a rehoming centre, praising the staff as ‘heroes’.

Tonight at 9pm on U&W, watch as he helps save three puppies that were smuggled into the country. The episode also features Keira, a new mother who arrived severely malnourished. While she receives urgent care, her situation proves to be more complex than initially thought.

The show is deeply moving, and Keanu Reeves isn’t afraid to show emotion on camera when a story resonates with him. He explains he wasn’t raised to express feelings openly—he was taught men should be stoic—but believes that’s a harmful idea. He feels that being vulnerable takes courage and allowing yourself to feel—even to cry—is a healthy and important thing for everyone, including men.

He last cried around a week before this conversation, but he doesn’t want to share what made him sad.

Many people probably see me as arrogant, which I hope isn’t true – arrogance is a really unpleasant quality. I think my appearance, with the tattoos and everything, leads people to misjudge me. The truth is, I’m actually very sensitive and easily moved to tears – I cry more often than people would expect.

James ‘Arg’ Argent first became known on TV in 2015 with the reality show The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE), where he was a regular cast member until 2021. Since then, he’s been on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebs Go Dating.

Looking back, the reality TV scene was limited to shows like Geordie Shore, TOWIE, and Made in Chelsea. For many of us, it wasn’t a planned career path, and I certainly didn’t anticipate where it would lead. The television world was just very different at that time, as I recall.

When I started working in television, I didn’t use social media and still don’t really enjoy it. I only use it because it’s part of the job. If I weren’t an actor, I’d happily live a quiet life in the countryside with my dogs and goats.

He doesn’t enjoy reality television and avoids watching the shows he appears on, with the single exception of ‘For Dogs’ Sake’ – he was an associate producer and saw how it was made. He says watching the editing process can lead to overthinking and self-criticism. His colleagues frequently suggest he participate in ‘The Celebrity Traitors’ and ‘Race Across the World,’ but he hasn’t seen either of those shows, though he thinks they sound enjoyable.

Wicks also co-hosts the podcast ‘Staying Relevant’ with his close friend, Sam Thompson. He jokes that they’re both still trying to work out how to stay popular. Really, it’s just a chance for the two friends to chat and catch up – he admits he started the podcast specifically so they could do that. He playfully describes Sam as irritating, but affectionately adds, ‘he’s my irritating friend.’

Wicks also hosts a YouTube podcast called Man Made, where he talks about what it means to be a man with various guests. He says he’s always surprised that no one ever asks him what he finds happiness in, and the answer is simple: motorbikes and dogs.

Riding my motorcycle completely clears my head – it’s incredibly meditative. And being with dogs brings me the greatest joy, peace, and sense of security. Those are the things that truly make me happy.

Wicks admits he’s a workaholic who needs to constantly be doing something. He’s struggled with insomnia since childhood and typically only sleeps three or four hours a night, which he’s become accustomed to. He attributes this to having a very active mind filled with many thoughts.

Wicks is the author of three books: For the Love of Frenchies, Never Enough, and Staying Relevant (co-written with Thompson). He manages multiple commitments while remaining true to himself. He believes it’s crucial to stay authentic, explaining that trying to please everyone else can lead to a loss of identity, which can be harmful in many ways.

I’ve definitely made errors throughout my life, but I’ve always stayed true to myself. I believe it’s crucial to choose your friends and companions carefully. They’re the ones who will help keep you grounded and notice if you start to lose sight of who you are, especially when life gets chaotic.

I have a tight-knit group of longtime friends who aren’t afraid to tell me when I’ve made a mistake, and I really value their honesty. Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to what strangers who only know me from TV think. When you’re a public figure, everyone has an opinion, and you can’t complain about that, but not all opinions are equally important.

If you can go to sleep each night feeling good about the person you are, you’re on the right track.
