Pixar seems to be regaining its creative spark. Early scores for their next film are promising, even surpassing those of this year’s popular movie, Inside Out 2.
The animated film Hoppers is getting rave reviews before it even hits theaters on March 6th. Currently, 97% of critics recommend it, based on 59 reviews. While this score could change as more reviews are published, it’s already exceptionally high.
The highly anticipated 2024 blockbuster opened with an impressive 89% approval rating and quickly became the year’s biggest hit. While Inside Out 2 benefited from the popularity of the first movie, released nearly ten years ago in 2015, Hoppers is a completely original story, making its positive reception even more remarkable.
What Are Critics Saying About Hoppers?
The announcement happened in June 2025 at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, where the studio highlighted its exceptionally strong upcoming projects. The film was revealed just days before the theatrical release of Elio.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated film is set in a unique world where humans and animals can truly understand each other. It’s not about animals talking like in other cartoons, though. Instead, scientists have developed a way to transfer a person’s mind into incredibly realistic robotic animals, letting people experience the world as an animal and communicate with them on their level.
As she begins to use the technology, she discovers incredible secrets about the animal world, far beyond her wildest expectations.
Wendy Lee Szany of The Movie Couple praised Hoppers as one of Pixar’s funniest movies yet, highlighting its positive message about finding yourself, caring for the environment, and showing kindness. Joey Magidson from Awards Radar described Hoppers as a wonderfully playful return to classic Pixar storytelling.
The review highlights Disney and Pixar’s successful combination of comedy and emotional depth in Hoppers. It notes that while the film carries important messages, it prioritizes being funny and telling a good story, ensuring the moral isn’t forced upon the audience.
Hoppers Could Be Pixar’s Next Big Hit
Pixar is known for setting the standard in animated films, but their latest movie, Elio, didn’t perform well at the box office. Its opening weekend numbers haven’t improved with releases on digital platforms and Disney+. While audiences generally liked the film—giving it an 89% ‘Verified Hot’ rating—it wasn’t enough to make it a financial success. However, early positive reviews, as seen on Hoppers, suggest Pixar is likely to return to form with future projects.
While there isn’t an official audience score yet, early reviews from moviegoers are overwhelmingly positive, with many giving it five stars. One viewer praised it as Pixar’s best original film in years, and others agree with critics that the movie has a powerful message and a strong connection to the natural world.
The animated film Hoppers is directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews. It stars Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco, and Meryl Streep, among others, who provide the voices for the characters.
Hoppers debuts in theaters on Mar. 6.
