PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts are currently being hacked, and unfortunately, existing security measures like two-factor authentication and passkeys aren’t preventing these breaches because of a flaw in the system. To make matters worse, PlayStation’s customer support is known for being unhelpful – many users have had negative experiences. This poor support is now actually helping hackers gain access to accounts.
Tech journalist Nicolas Lellouche recently discovered his PlayStation Network account had been hacked, even though he had security measures enabled. The hacker was able to make purchases using his account, and despite contacting PlayStation Support to regain access, the hacker quickly took control again.
PSN Hacker Reveals Basic Exploits
After his PlayStation account was hacked for the second time, Lellouche reached out to both PlayStation Support and the hacker. Surprisingly, the hacker explained how they gained access: Lellouche had publicly shared his PSN username online in 2023. The hacker said this simple piece of information was all they needed, as Sony’s security measures make it too easy to take over accounts.
Lellouche discovered that Sony support can recover an account using just the last few digits of a payment card or the console’s serial number – no other information or security checks are needed. Essentially, the hacker was exploiting PlayStation Support to gain access to Lellouche’s PSN account.
Don’t Make This Mistake With Your PSN Account
This isn’t the first time this issue has been reported, but it’s one of the most well-known cases, and surprisingly, it still hasn’t been resolved. Sony hasn’t even acknowledged the problem. The bottom line is: to stay safe, don’t ever share details about your PlayStation Network (PSN) account. If you’re a public person and your account information is publicly available, hackers can exploit this weakness and take over your account at any time, and there’s currently no way to prevent it.
So, that’s my take on things! I’m always curious to hear what you guys think, so definitely leave a comment and let me know your thoughts, or jump into the discussion over on the ComicBook Forum – I’ll be hanging out there too!
