Recent news about Pluribus season 2 reveals it’s following a frustrating trend common among many current TV shows regarding how they’re released.
Apple TV was known for its excellent science fiction programming, but the premiere of Pluribus in late 2025 truly cemented its position as the top streaming service in the genre. The show received almost universally positive reviews and quickly became Apple TV’s most popular program, breaking all previous viewership records. Its creator, Vince Gilligan, secured a renewal for a second season even before the first season had finished airing.
Even with a lot of positive aspects, Pluribus season 2 continues to struggle with a significant issue regarding streaming.
Vince Gilligan’s Pluribus Season 2 Update Confirms It Isn’t Releasing Before 2027
I was so relieved to hear Vince Gilligan wasn’t planning to rush season two of Pluribus – quality takes time, you know? It was funny though, Stephen King chimed in with a playful nudge, gently reminding Vince that time waits for no one! Here’s what he tweeted – it really made me smile:
Good news initially came from Rhea Seehorn, who shared that the writers were already starting work on the script for Pluribus and moving forward as fast as they could. However, Vince Gilligan has since explained that fans shouldn’t anticipate the second season arriving quickly. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he and the writing team are still actively working on it, though progress is ongoing.
However, he also warned that “it takes a long time to come up with these episodes.“
He drew comparisons between Pluribus and popular shows like The Pitt and The X-Files, but pointed out that Pluribus can’t maintain the same yearly release pace. He expects season 2, similar to season 1, to be released towards the end of the year, but doesn’t believe a return in 2026 is probable.
Check out his full statement below:
Thanks for everyone’s understanding. However, we won’t be bringing back ‘The Pitt’ annually. I’d love to, because it’s a fantastic, classic-style show, similar to how we used to release new seasons of ‘The X-Files’ every year in the same month. It won’t be a yearly event like ‘The Pitt,’ but we do plan to return around the same time each year – the question is just when that will be.
The Long Wait For Pluribus Season 2 Will Be Worth It
It’s becoming unusual to see shows like The Pitt consistently release new seasons annually, as many streaming series struggle to maintain that pace. Even highly-rated shows on platforms like Apple TV+, such as Severance, often have multi-year gaps between seasons. These long waits can make it difficult for viewers to stay connected to the story and characters.
As Stephen King observed, everyone ages, and there’s a chance you might not live to see the end of a TV show or book series you really enjoy.
Luckily, shows like Pluribus deliver new seasons that live up to expectations. The first season of Pluribus ended on a cliffhanger, making the wait for season 2 feel especially frustrating. Still, knowing the talent of writer Vince Gilligan, it’s hard to imagine the new season won’t be worth the wait and beautifully build on everything established in season one.
