Pokémon fans are reacting with skepticism to Game Freak’s new RPG for the PlayStation 5, Beast of Reincarnation.
This new game, built with Unreal Engine 5, looks far more advanced than the studio’s games for Nintendo, although its visual style is somewhat typical.
The game, described as an RPG for one player and their dog, appears to combine fast-paced action combat, similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with more traditional turn-based RPG elements, as shown in a recent Xbox presentation.
The game centers around Emma, who battles enemies using a katana in quick, exciting combat. You don’t fight alone, though – her dog, Koo, can help! By successfully blocking attacks, you charge a special meter. Once full, you can call Koo in for assistance, and the action briefly slows down, giving you an edge.
The press release reveals:
Instead of making the game all about fast reactions under pressure, we aimed to design moments where players could slow down, strategize, and approach combat like a turn-based RPG, carefully planning their moves.
A cool aspect of the game is Emma’s ability to use plants to get around. However, this same power, known as the “blight,” has made her an outsider, and it’s a central part of the story.
Meanwhile, Koo is known as a “malefact”, or a creature that poses a threat to society.
It’s unusual because Emma’s job is to hunt and kill these godlike creatures, creating a natural conflict between them. Combined with the fact that they both feel alone, this sets up a really compelling story.
Overall, this is looking really good – better than expected, actually. It’s one of the most impressive personal projects we’ve seen come from the Game Freak team.
The game doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but the developers are aiming for Summer 2026. It’s worth watching, particularly if you were a fan of games like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West on the PS3, as this new project shares a similar feel.
