After 22 years, a long-standing problem with the original Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen games has finally been addressed in the recently released Nintendo Switch versions. While the Switch release is a straightforward port of the classic Game Boy Advance titles, Game Freak and Nintendo have quietly included some improvements.
Pokémon fans have discovered that a long-standing bug, often called the “roaring roar” bug, has finally been fixed. This bug affected players who chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur as their starter Pokémon. After beating the game, either Entei or Raikou would appear first. If these Pokémon used the move Roar during battle, the game incorrectly registered it as a knockout instead of them fleeing. This prevented players from ever catching either Pokémon, through no fault of their own.
22-Year-Old Infamous Bug Finally Fixed
I’m so relieved to hear that one annoying bug is finally fixed! It took a while for us fans to find it – you really had to get into the post-game content – but lots of people have confirmed it’s working now. Sadly, there’s still an issue with the IVs of legendary Pokémon, and it seems like that one isn’t a simple bug – more like a tricky coding problem they couldn’t quite solve.
If this issue is resolved, it’s great news for fans! It hints that other problems present in the original Game Boy Advance games have been addressed as well. Many people expected these new versions to be very basic, but this fix proves they’ve put more effort into improving them.
You can now play Pokémon LeafGreen and FireRed on the Nintendo Switch for $20. Unlike other Game Boy Advance titles, they aren’t part of the Nintendo Switch Online service. While not directly available on the Switch 2, you can still enjoy them on that console through backward compatibility.
