Pikachu is the face of the Pokémon franchise, even though Eevee is also very popular. It first became a fan favorite as Ash’s original Pokémon partner, and it’s largely stayed the same throughout the series. While its evolved form, Raichu, has regional variations, Pikachu itself has never had a different form – until now. The recent trailer for the new game, Pokémon Pokopia, suggests that may finally be changing.
The Pokémon Company recently revealed more about their upcoming life simulation game, Pokémon Pokopia, in a 10-minute trailer. The game, launching on March 5th, 2026, blends elements of Minecraft and Animal Crossing, offering a unique Pokémon experience. The trailer also surprised fans with the announcement of “Peculiar Pokémon” – new and creative variations of existing Pokémon. This includes a brand-new form of Pikachu called Peakychu!
The New Peculiar Pokemon Variants in Pokmon Pokopia Are a Mystery Fans Can’t Wait to Solve

Near the end of the Pokopia trailer, players got a surprising first glimpse of something new in the game. The trailer showed several unique versions of Pokémon, giving alternate appearances to Pokémon that haven’t had them before. Along with the game’s Pokémon Professor, Professor Tangrowth, three brand-new, unusual Pokémon were revealed. While details are scarce, we can start to speculate about them based on how they look.
The first thing many people have noticed is Peakychu, a new form of Pikachu. It has a ghostly, pale grey and white color, and its ears hang down instead of standing up straight. The strange things happening around it suggest it might be a Ghost-type Pokémon, which would make it the first new Pikachu variant ever seen in the games – unless you consider the Pikachu clone from the first Pokémon movie. However, it’s also possible that Peakychu is a rare, unique Pokémon, like Professor Tangrowth, and won’t appear in future games.

Alongside Peakychu and Professor Tangrowth, a new form of Snorlax has been revealed: Mosslax. This moss-covered Snorlax appears to be waking up from a long sleep, with a flower blooming on its head. Like Pikachu, Snorlax hasn’t received a new form since its original appearance in the first 151 Pokémon, excluding its Gigantamax form in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
Okay, so they finally gave Smeargle a variant! This new one, they’re calling Smearguru, is covered in all sorts of bright, splashed-on colors – looks like it’s really going for it with a painting. It’s cool to see, because Smeargle isn’t one of the original Pokemon like Pikachu or Snorlax, so it’s awesome that it’s getting some extra love with this new form. It’s like, its first real makeover!
Currently, it’s still a mystery how the new Peculiar Pokemon will function in Pokopia. We also don’t know if they’ll become a recurring feature in future Pokemon games, like Alolan or Hisuian forms, or if they’re exclusive to this game. Regardless, these fresh designs for familiar Pokemon are already winning fans over.
