Pokemon TCG’s Rarest Mega Evolution Cards Have Lowest Pull Rates Ever (But It’s Not All Bad News)

It’s been a few days since the brand-new Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution cards became available in stores. As usual, fans are having trouble finding them because the demand for Pokemon cards is still higher than the amount available. However, even those who were able to purchase some Mega Evolution packs likely didn’t find any of the new, ultra-rare Gold Cards. Although fans expected the Gold Cards to be scarce, it turns out they have the lowest pull rates in Pokemon TCG history.

Many Pokemon fans rely on TCG Player to buy and sell used cards. However, the site has also become a helpful resource for information about popular trading card games. Recently, TCG Player opened more than 5,000 packs of Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution to determine how often valuable cards appear. If you’re hoping to find those Mega Hyper Rare gold cards, the results aren’t promising, and the current resale prices reflect that.

Mega Evolution Gold Mega Hyper Rares Skyrocket in Price Due to Staggeringly Low Pull Rates

Generally, getting most cards in Mega Evolution is fairly reasonable. Special Illustration Rares appear about 1 in every 101 packs, and regular Illustration Rares are found around 1 in 9 packs. However, the new Mega Hyper Rare Gold Cards are much harder to get. The odds of getting *any* of these Gold Cards are about 1 in 1260, but finding the *specific* one you want is around 1 in 2520. This makes these cards extremely difficult to obtain from random pack purchases.

These new cards are meant to take the place of the Hyper Rare cards from previous sets. The Pokémon Company was serious when they added “mega” to the card’s rarity name. It’s not only a reference to Mega Evolutions, but it also shows just how mega, mega rare these cards are. As you’d expect, those who’ve been able to obtain them are selling them at a high price. Naturally.

The new Mega Evolution set only includes two incredibly rare cards: Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex. As of today, a perfect condition Gold Mega Gardevoir ex is selling for $1,200 on TCG Player. A Gold Mega Lucario ex in “lightly played” condition is currently around $600. Interestingly, the price of these cards has already increased since TCG Player first published their estimates of how often these cards appear in packs.

Naturally, prices for resold cards tend to fluctuate a lot in the first few weeks after a new set is released. The cards that have actually been sold have gone for around $400-$500, so the initial price of over $1000 may be unrealistic. Regardless, it’s still too early to know the final value of these cards. What we do know is that because of how rarely they appear in packs, there are probably very few of these new Mega Hyper Rare cards available for players to find.

We might have just seen the rarest Pokemon TCG cards in a long time, but surprisingly, this set has pretty good pull rates overall. Getting the shiny gold versions of these cards will still take buying a lot of Mega Evolutions boosters. However, most of the other valuable cards in the set are a bit easier to find compared to those from the Scarlet & Violet series. So, if you’re like me and really want those beautiful Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Mega Venusaur Special Illustration cards, your odds of pulling them aren’t bad at all.
