We used to spend Sunday nights at our local pub, which had a karaoke night. The more we drank, the worse – and more enthusiastic – our singing became. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty, and by the end of the night, it was truly awful. Seeing the trailer for the Power Ballad movie reminded me of our editor’s particularly off-key rendition of Harry Nilsson’s ‘Without You’.
I’m really excited about this movie! It’s about Rick, a wedding singer who’s seen better days, and how his life changes when he meets Danny, a former boy-band star. They connect through music, have a great jam session, and then Danny uses one of Rick’s old songs to make a comeback. It’s a story about Rick trying to get the credit he feels he deserves, and he’s willing to risk a lot to do it. It’s going to be a wild ride!
Featuring Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald (who also helped write the screenplay), Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor, this film is directed and written by John Carney, known for movies like Sing Street and Once. It’s described as a heartwarming story about music, believing in yourself, the importance of friendship, and what people are willing to do to achieve their dreams.
Copyright disputes are common in the music and film industries, and a recent case mirrors this trend. Irish songwriter Ray Heffernan claims he co-wrote Robbie Williams’ popular song “Angels” in 1996, but these kinds of claims aren’t unusual for artists.
POWER BALLAD IS IN UK AND IRISH CINEMAS ON 29TH MAY 2026
