It’s been two years since the Netflix series ended, but the Power Rangers are back! The original show debuted in 1993, and now Disney+ is giving the franchise a fresh start. The team behind the popular series Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be leading the new show.
I’m so excited! I just heard from Dan Shotz, one of the showrunners alongside Jonathan E. Steinberg, that a Power Rangers reboot is officially happening! MovieWeb reported the news, and it’s awesome because the rumors are true. They actually confirmed it at the event for Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 – they’re going to be bringing the classic series back for Disney+, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it!
Shotz didn’t share many details about the reboot, but he and Steinberg aim to create a version of the story that truly comes alive.
He chuckled and replied, “You’re asking me questions I can’t really answer. All I can say is we’re definitely hoping to make that story happen.” Regarding the reboot, Shotz confirmed the rumors are true, adding, “I can’t share details, but I’m incredibly excited about it.”
It’s still unknown if the new take on Power Rangers will build on the show’s history of over 30 years, or if it will be a completely fresh start for the superhero team.
A Reinvention of the Classic Power Rangers Franchise
Development on the series began in early 2025 when Disney+ announced a new project with Shotz and Steinberg. Hasbro was set to produce the show, which was planned as a fresh take on the classic Power Rangers franchise, aiming to appeal to both longtime fans and a new audience.
The latest Power Rangers series, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, premiered on Netflix in 2023 and had 10 episodes. Power Rangers originated from the Japanese show Super Sentai. The first Power Rangers TV show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, debuted in 1993 and quickly became popular, leading to a movie in 1995. Another film, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, was released in 1997. The franchise was then rebooted in 2017 with a new movie and cast, separate from the existing series.
You can currently watch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury on Netflix. However, the new Power Rangers series on Disney+ doesn’t have a release date yet.
