For three decades, Power Rangers has been a consistent presence on television, growing to include comics, video games, board games, and movies. Despite strong fan requests, the franchise has never ventured into animation. It’s particularly disappointing because an animated Power Rangers movie almost happened – created by the same studio that later produced the popular Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, and early looks were very promising.
Back in 2015, Saban still controlled the Power Rangers brand, and it had been a long time since a Power Rangers movie was made. No animated Power Rangers projects existed at that time, but leaked materials revealed Saban was collaborating with ZAGG Animation Studios (known for Miraculous) on an animated movie called Power Rangers: Origins. ZAGG’s animation style and character designs resembled those of Miraculous, but the project was eventually cancelled when work shifted to the 2017 live-action reboot.
What Was Power Rangers Origins?
Details about Power Rangers: Origins are still limited, but leaked artwork and footage offer a glimpse of the film’s direction (Legacy of Nerd). The movie centers on the original Power Rangers, and while their costumes remain largely the same as the classic designs, there are some changes. Instead of multiple diamond shapes, the suits now feature a single white diamond on the chest, and white armor on the shoulders. This creates a sleeker, more streamlined look while still clearly referencing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
The costumes – gloves, boots, and helmets – are largely unchanged, but have a more streamlined and modern look. We also see Zordon and Alpha 5, and the character posters are very striking.
New concept art gives us our first glimpse of the Dinozords, which have been given a modern, streamlined makeover. They feature smoother designs and bright colors, with the Mastodon and Triceratops receiving the most significant updates. We also see the Megazord in several forms – one is taller and more slender, while another is bulkier with larger boots and a powerful energy sword.
Even now, the Power Rangers franchise hasn’t ventured into animation, but it would be fantastic to see that happen during Hasbro’s ownership. With Hasbro no longer needing to base seasons directly on Japanese Sentai and free to explore new options like animation without external approval, the possibility seems more likely than ever. However, only time will tell if it actually comes to fruition.
